The onboarding will offer you a lot of topics to sign up to. These contain communities in them. The idea is to populate subscription feeds, however it can leave some users with a lot of undesired subscriptions if they click too many.

If you wish to roll this back. Go to Settings -> Profile and click the yellow bar. Don't click the red bar!

But welcome, and feel free to post your thoughts here.

!newcomers@piefed.zip for a specific community also devoted to new users to the Fediverse.

Come Join us in the Zulip Chat if you have specific queries.

There has been this thing where a user seems to be able to make special posts that don't follow my feed format including bluring nsfw when my setting says not to but also making them pop out over the rest. I very much am big on user control of their experience. Is this something that actually happens. Can it be blocked or overwritten or something? Only thing I can think to do is block users who do whatever causes it.

On the Connect app, there's an option that users can enable to make user notes global. This applies a user tag to all accounts with the same username across instances. Any accounts that get a copy of the tag has an added * to denote that it wasn't originally tagged; as a reminder since some people may simply have the same username on different instances.

I prefer to tag accounts over blocking because I think it's beneficial to upvote pushback or correction replies, which you wouldn't see by blocking. But some people have way too many alts and it's rather tedious to tag each one. Granted, I also have many accounts, but that's mainly for testing purposes.

Hi. I've set up a new single-user instance for myself today and I'm trying to create a local community.

I'm getting this error:

"You are not able to do this action due to being a very new account or because of a low reputation."

Can I somehow get around this limitation?

With Hetzner's price rises taking effect, I'm moving piefed.social to somewhere else. Most likely it'll be during a quiet time when few people will notice, around 00:00 to 3:00 UTC on Saturday.

EDIT: server migration is complete! Bringing it online in it's new home was a bit rocky so possibly half the posts made while piefed.social was down were lost.

I find posts and comments from Mastodon to be almost unreadable because they are loaded with hashtags in-line with the content.

Would it be possible to strip those out when viewed through Piefed?

Hoping someone can help here.

WomensStuff was migrated from my instance using piefed migration tools some months ago, however I still get all the reports for their community even though I am not the instance admin, the post/commenter is not from my instance, and the reporter is not on my instance.

Example:

I have reached out to @LadyButterfly@piefed.blahaj.zone and then @ada@piefed.blahaj.zone but got no response.

Whilst WomensStuff has a logical reason, they were migrated from lazysoci.al, I am also receiving the odd report for other communities not associated with us, but every time the reporter is a piefed user. Coincidence maybe?

Another example:

I'm thinking this is a piefed issue, has anyone else had the same problem?

I have heard people talk about tagging people instead of blocking them and I did not think much about it. I had a person with a one month history though who had some comments that had me evaluating them for a block. Their history is just to small atm. So I thought. Hey this would be great for some sort of tag like under review or probation or something so I can remember to evaluate down the line. I looked around but did not see anything. I think its very possible people are talking about something that is specific to an app or maybe lemmy has it. On the other hand maybe I am just missing how to do it. So this is a question or an ask depending.

When attempting to create a community with the URL c/MindfulMaverick, I encounter the error message: "[This name is in use already.]" However, no community by that name currently exists. It’s possible the system is incorrectly flagging a conflict with my username rather than an existing community. In fact, browsing https://piefed.zip/c/mindfulmaverick redirects me to https://piefed.zip/community/add_local, suggesting the name is not actually taken.

Also, there should be a dedicated flair for issues to help categorize and address such problems.

I like posts to be properly tagged, but sometimes I don't have the time. An idea would be to have an auto-assigned role so that 20% of users who spend the most time in a community gain the ability to curate post tags, improving discovery of old posts.

To further incentivize tagging, consider adding a leaderboard that tracks and rewards users for their tag curation efforts—highlighting top contributors each day, week, month and year.

Sorry, cannot reasonably report this in any more proper manner in the hurry.

The character & somehow gets garbled here when viewed through Lemmy:

Hello. I thought I could use my Lemmy login details to log into PieFed, but it isn't working and had to create a separate account. Can you please clarify?

I'm having trouble seeing functional differences at least in my limited ways of using the platform, between blorp & interstellar. Blorp probably fits my screen a little better. How have you decided on a default between these and/or others and what am I missing? Thanks.

I have two communities on SDF and I'd like to move them to Piefed. But the SDF instance is dead.

I've been meaning to do that for months because the SDF instance has always worked like crap - when it worked at all - but I put off doing it because it was still kinda sorta working. In fact I specifically joined Piefed for the purpose of exfiltrating my communities from that godforsaken instance.

Well, I waited too long and now the SDF instance is properly dead. Despite the message on the main page, knowing SDF, I'm pretty sure it'll stay dead forever - or at least for a very long time.

How can I move my communities here? The instructions say I should lock the communities on the old instance, post pre-migration notices there, submit the move requests here, then post final migrations notice on the old instance. But of course, I can't do that since the old instance is hosed.

Can I submit a move request for my communities and lock them / post the migration notices later on the SDF instance when it comes back online (if it ever does)?

Hey there,

on my Piefed instance I'm being haunted by posts I've already read that keep re-appearing, often months later.

What can I do about that?

So currently, we have two different closed-off developer chats on Zulip and Matrix.
This means, that new devs will be confused about which channel to join and experienced devs have to actively look around in both channels for questions to answer.
This seems like a really inefficient system, so we should at least decide on one official communication channel.

The other issue with this is the closed-off nature of these real-time chat applications. Shure, anyone can join, but answers to technical questions will inevitably get burried in unstructured long chatlogs, which no new develloper will read through. That will lead to a lot of questions being asked, that were already answered previously.

If we abandoned these channels in favor of one unified piefed community (like piefed-devellopment@piefed.social) or something, we could build a good knowledge base of answered questions, that are easy to search through and look around in and will also get indexed by search engines. This will make it easier and easier for new developers to join over time, as they will be able to look through an increasingly extensive knowledge base if they have any questions and also easily find the people, that are willing to help them.

Funnily enough, Rimou has already talked about the advantages of a forum-like communication channel for open source devellopers, so i think it's time for us to apply this to our own project.

It shouldn’t be too hard to have a client track 20 minutes in a given day then upload it to the website.

Update : there is a poll about how you want to desatived customized community by mods. Please voice your ideas ;) https://piefed.social/c/piefed_meta/p/1956838/how-do-you-want-disabling-community-themes-to-work

Hi !

With the update of that allows mods to change their community theme, i just wrote a wiki page that browse almost all Piefed customization options for users.

There is some rough edge but it is mostly complete. The profile section lacks some details :

https://piefed.social/community/fediverse/wiki/piefed-user-css

With the CSS, you can remove vote button, emojis reaction, the logo of your instance, change font, change theme and also create a new theme...

Look what you can get when you play around. :3

Piefed Tarte on a custom user theme
The original instance : https://tarte.nuage-libre.fr/

Check this community too : !piefed_css@piefed.social

Good reading ! :)

For the newest piefed release, I worked on a new feature, that allows community admins to choose a "community theme", which overrides the users theme while they are browsing the specific community. This works for every user on piefed, that has the newest version, it unfortunately won't show up on lemmy, because they have a completely different theming system.

There are already some cool themes to choose from (the themes, that the users could pick from before), but the idea with this, is that you can create your own themes for your community and propose it to our Codeberg repository. There are so many cool ways, to make your community stand out, I am imagining maybe a swirling background for a balatro community, a theme that makes posts looked like ripped out pages and a custom comic-book hand as a cursor for !nonpolitical_comics@piefed.social or other comic communities, maybe the hercules, or irix theme for retro communities.

I am sure you have many ideas, that are even cooler and I really hope that piefed get's even more wild and interresting with this update!

(PS: I know that the screenshot is of a lemmy community and that this wouldn't work, it's just meant as an example)

I posted about this a week ago:

Currently, instance bans and community bans are treated as two separate things. When a user is banned from an instance, you’ll often see in the logs a bunch of community bans alongside it at once (at least from Lemmy communities). These are communities that user has posted on. An instance ban automatically applies hard-bans to communities they have interacted in from that instance. But the problem here is its only communities they’ve interacted in.

The instance ban itself is simply a rejection of federation. It doesn’t block users from posting in communities on that instance - only the community bans do that. It just means their posts won’t federate out. This means that an instance banned user can continue to be a nuisance in most communities (or all, if they are pre-emptively banned) on an instance locally - and the moderators of that community and instance won’t even know because they don’t view their community from there. With larger numbers of users would also mean larger amounts of trolls and incompatible users, which could greatly increase the chance of people simply vandalising communities and no-one even noticing.

Lemmy 1.0 promises to fix this apparently from their end, but I think at least for as Piefed is concerned we could get in on this first. We need a hard block on all Piefed accounts from being to interact on any community that is from an instance they are bannedfrom. We also need a way before that for Piefed based communities to automatically throw out all comments made even locally by instance banned accounts based from Lemmy.

It's now been implemented on the latest piefed. A Piefed user instance banned from anywhere will now be hard-banned from all communities on that instance to prevent them from being a local menace unbeknownst the moderators of those communities. But all Piefed instances need to update.

You'll get taken to a random community. Once you arrive there's a link at the top of the page to /r/random so you can just hammer away at that until you get somewhere that's the right combo of random and interesting.

There is also /r/randnsfw that takes you to a random nsfw communty if your instance has them.
