why are we interspersing non-tournament games and tournament games on the schedule? Doesn't that kind of ruin the eventfulness? I keep looking up after games and the standings haven't changed and I'm like "oh too bad... good win but it didn't count for the tournament"

Interspersing games from different competitions is pretty normal for the European soccer model, which this is clearly taking inspiration from. Once you get used to it it's no biggie, although it is somewhat complicated by the NBA's choice to make most of the games still count as regular season games.
