According to this it became more political in the 2000s but maybe there was an additional shift after 2017, when "Jann Wenner sold 49% of Rolling Stone to BandLab Technologies, a Singaporean company."
PMC bought out BandLab several years ago. They're the ones that got the majority share (51%) when BandLab got the minority.
