East Group C:

Celtics: 3-1 (+27)

Magic: 3-1 (+22)

Nets: 3-1 (+10)

The Nets beating the Raptors created a 3-way tie between the top 3 teams in the group (Celtics beat Nets, Magic beat Celtics, Nets beat Magic), so point differential decides the winner of the group.

Would have been interesting to see what would happen if the Celtics were only up by like 20 at the end of the game.1) to see if they would have actually went for the points. And 2) to see how much derozan would have cried about jt

Every team really should be playing at the same time on the final day. It’s a little unfair Boston knew how much they had to win by and they went all out

The fact that the Celtics won the tie break against a Magic team that easily whooped their ass exposed the flaws of this system. How tf do you lose a tie break to a team who’s ass you whooped head to head!?

this is the dumbest fucking thing i've ever heard of

When Jaylen Brown threw the ball away with 2 minutes left and the lead at 28 or something, I was 100% sure the Celtics would be out. Still I have no idea how they managed to be up 33 with 4 to go and still somehow be in danger of not winning by at least 23. Unclutchest team in the league

All final IST group games need to be played on the same night. Probably a lot harder to do, but Boston had the advantage of knowing how many points they needed to win by.

Watching tonight felt a lot like gambling. Just covering spreads

This is all fun and games… until Tatum or Brown gets injured for this mickey mouse tournament

If we lose: who gives a fuck about Adam Silver's glorified summer league

If we win: BANNER 17.5, EAT IT LAKERS

Hello darkness my old friend...I hope your futile win was fruitful Brooklyn. Because you helped the Celtics instead of the Magic

[–] KeeganMcD@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

It’s such a ridiculous disadvantage to have your games finish before the rest of your group, that’s definitely got to be adjusted in the future somehow

[–] JackCullenMocha@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Last game of the IST should be played simultaneously. We got fucked hard

wake me up when this winter season ends

[–] Aeronova20@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Ah, back to dispair as a Magic fan

[–] SnooDogs6575@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

I feel bad for magic fans. Everything lined up for the Celtics to take back the lead

Crazy how so many people were shitting on the IST but today is showing that while there may need to be adjustments, it’s a good addition to the NBA. Who would be caring like this about these games in previous seasons? We haven’t even gotten to the best parts either

This is possibly a little reactionary based on how the East C Group shook out, but I think for a 4 match group stage it could be more interesting if the tie-breaker was points differential first then H2H, giving teams more control over their own destiny. For example tonight the Nets were reliant on the Celtics losing to have a chance to progress, as the Cs held the H2H advantage, but if it was points differential then they could have tried to ball out and give themselves a chance.

It also puts more emphasis on margin of victory, which isn't typically a thing of importance in the NBA. Teams might be more willing to put effort in the 4th Quarter of a blowout to either continue boosting that differential or limit the damage, rather than it becoming 12 minutes of garbage time.

Brooklyn would have won the group if they had the highest point differential after last night

[–] JoJonesy@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

i do genuinely feel kinda bad for Magic fans. like it is what it is, but to deliver us our biggest loss of the season and then still lose the tiebreaker kinda sucks

[–] DrunkRoach@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Incoming Celtics fans that said a few days ago that the Celtics didnt care about the IST

Using H2H as the first tiebreaker in the group stage is flawed when each team only plays one game against every other team in the group. The NFL does this as well for conference seeding among teams in different divisions - and they're wrong for it. For it to be fair, the group stage would have to be 8 games. Where each team has a home game against every other team. Otherwise, differential should be the first tiebreaker.
