Another retro game post from me, I'm just posting my collection. If you want me to stop just say! I'm using my own knowledge of each game and promise not to use Wikipedia so corrections please. They are games i used to own and have a sentimental attachment to.

This is a very rare Japanese reviewers or promotional copy of Vib Ribbon. You play a wire frame rabbit jumping over obstacles in time with the music as you "evolve". What was really cool about this game is that you could put your own music CDs in and it would randomly generate a level for you. What makes this even rarer is that the factory sealed tab is upside down! The New York Museum of Modern Art has a copy of this game as a permanent exhibition as a display of late 90s digital expression. The music from this game has been living rent free in my head for nearly 30 years.

“If you want me to stop just say!”

Can we say the opposite? Posts like this are hella interesting and we need more!

Vib Ribbon has been on my list for a looooong time. I wanna check it out but I don’t wanna emulate it, I wanna play it for real… I’ll snag a copy one day!

Ahh, cheers. Ive got loads more so I'll post every couple days.

When I was a kid, like around 6 years old, we had a game demo disc for PS1 that had a little demo video of this game. I've never seen it irl, but I get a nice little whiplash of nostalgy of everything that disc contained whenever I see it mentioned. Definitely a unique piece of digital history, this game!

Im in the UK, my friend had a demo too. We played it to death till the full game came out.

My demo disc only had a video of the game :( But it had playable demos of many other games!

I heard of this game a few years ago but it's really cool, feels like one of those early gaming experiments that no major company will ever try today.

IIRC it came out at a similar time as Parappa the Rapper, it was sensible that Vib Ribbon did it differently.

Actually made by the same devs during the same year that um jammer lammy came out.

Absolute genius Matsuura during its prime

Man, I wish they would rerelease Um Jammer Lammy. Better than Parappa imo

I'm interested in how collectors categorize their collections. How does it qualify as a rare miss seal and not a resealed copy?

[–] TheVoiceOfRaison@thelemmy.club 5 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Well, I obviously cant attest to its authenticity 100%, but to fake a factory seal tear strip is very difficult. Also, the Y folds on the top and bottom are very neat and flat. Someone must have fed in into the machine that seals games wrong? I honestly don't know how the machines operate.

Thanks. It's alright if you don't have all the answers. It's just kind of a hobby of mine. It started a few years ago when Beckett started slabbing old phone cards from Japan. It's usually just a fun little trip through another fandom, but sometimes it just seems fraudulent on the surface.

[–] TheVoiceOfRaison@thelemmy.club 2 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I think when you get into grading there is a certain level of fraudulent activity going on. There are definitely the odd re seals out there but I've personally not seen or come across a fake seal tab.

I see the seal now. I was paying so much attention to the top that I missed it down there.
