Started pirating in the napster days. I was an expert for a long time...

Then netflix was actually pretty good for a few years... i stopped pirating stuff.... then alowly slowly the enshittification crept in.... i got sick and tired and quit legal streaming one day.

Then i realized, i had no idea where to look for torrents anymore.... demonoid? Piratebay?

i'm still using 1337x, but apparently thats for boomers?

What are the cool kids using these days?

Thinkpads are supposed to be good (never tried), but i have a normal lenovo ideapad, and there's no firmware update on LVFS...

I had to update the bios using a windows boot disk, and one time it screwed up grub and debian couldnt boot until i fixed it with a liveCD

Interesting they write "struck by jetski rider" to show the operator's responsibility...

But when its a car driver they say, "child struck by SUV"... implying the operator had no choice in the matter

Seems backward.... i would think meta already knows that stuff and sells it to insurers

Sometimes i get their love for china or cuba or whatever, but i dont understand the love for russia.... there's nothing remotely communist or pro-worker in russia anymore... its just a bunch of oligarchs like amerikkka (who .ml claims to hate)

the authoritarianism in china has at least raised the standard of living and modernization for most people... but all the lack of freedoms still suck. But it's a deal that most of them happily accept... dont criticize xinnie the pooh, but also have a good standard of living and modern cities.

This was me in a foreign city one time. Walked into a random bar by myself, had a few drinks. In retrospect i think it was a gay bar, but i had no idea.

Even a video camera with the lens cap on generates more than enough entropy

interesting. Never heard this before. How is the entropy created? Wont all the values for the pixels be near zero (extemely simplified)?

“The challenge for the is that RCMP has been unable and unwilling to actually investigate and sustain investigations related to financial crimes,” said Davis. “There is a lack of funding, a lack of skills, lack of resources and a lack of political will. But financial crimes investigations are long, complex and require sustained resources, which I’m hopeful we’re now going to see put in place.”

was the rcmp financial crimes division actually unwilling to investigate? Or just underfunded?

This person seems to be speaking in the present tense... in which case, the lack of financial crime investigation seems to be a consequence of prior funding cuts

Didnt we used to have an rcmp financial crimes unit that was disbanded?

I poop twice a day at the office

it's like the most basic drink in the world.... i can't understand how people can screw it up so bad...

For no particular reason, i always used this website to read the kernel mailing list. It seems to have gone dark a few weeks ago.

Anyone know what happened?

i have a pretty good GPU now.

besides crysis, what old games can i go back and play on ultra-super-max settings and would still give my GPU a good workout?

or what games looked really good on ultra at the time but struggled to deliver fps, and would now be a joke for a modern high end GPU?

"The Rant" guy is back. And this time, promoting Canada instead of sub-par beer.

Way better than the original rant.

Literally crying while watching this.

Fun fact: it's Jeff Douglas from CBC Radio

as the title says, i checked the "Open links in a new tab" option, but posts still open in the same tab. anyone else having this problem?

using firefox on debian linux, if that matters...

Has there been a major spike in user registrations or any other metric? I've never seen something "go viral" like this on lemmy before.

My niece has an old iphone with no SIM/phone number. Only wifi internet access.

Looking for an app for both of us to be able to chat

She cant chat with me over signal because no phonee number. She chats with the rest of the family over imessage, but i have an android phone

Is there an app available for both android and iphone to let me chat with her?

Thanks

Edit: willing to self-host for extra privacy. My nieces and nephews are all young children so i definitely want to encourage/educate them to get off corporate controlled communications channels
