You don't have to ask anyone's permission except your partner. The ring purchase should also be discussed with your partner. Tradition and capitalism are a heavy combo.

Used Pixels with Graphene will be your cheapest option. The concept of Fairphone is awesome, but for Americans they're pretty expensive. Morally the Fairphone is the better option from a hardware standpoint.

Just switch. The whole industry built around Windows is a sham and refusing to switch is the reason it's as bad as it is. It's capitalism 101... Prices keep going up and y'all keep buying. It's no different in this case.

The concept is a good one. The marketing and financial backing is bad. I think an affordable ev would be a good thing, but this is America.
