EDIT: The script has been updated a few times. It now has new features. You should check it out again, even if you already have.

exactly what is says on the can. put in the multireddit URL of all your subs (explained in script), get a list of lemmy communities of the same name.

Even better if it was customizable.

Also generally I'd love if most features come with an option to turn them off. For example the pop-up of new replies. I can see that getting annoying really fast on very active accounts.

An idea that just occurred to me. I was looking for communities on machine learning to join, so I searched https://browse.feddit.de/ and found a bunch. They don't have much content but together they have at least 4 or 5 posts each, which adds up to a few posts, so I subscribed to all of them.

However, now I have no way of "grouping" them so that I can view posts of all communities in my feed related to the topic of machine learning.

I was wondering if some concept of "super communities" could be interesting for Lemmy, similar to "multireddits". People could curate their collection of favourite communities around a topic, over multiple instances, and users could easily subscribe and browse the whole bunch of them.

I've gone a full week without Reddit and I'm realizing the sheer amount of time I wasted on that fucking site. I'm taking back control of my time, my mental real estate, and mindfulness. I don't need new content every single waking moment, checking the app multiple times a day. If I check Lemmy every other day, that SHOULD be the relationship I want with an app like this.

And if I'm really really bored, I'll check "All instances" and sort by New on Jerboa!

Hello I am unable to log into lemmy.world at all via Safari. Once clicking log in, it just spins forever and I disabled all of the extensions and so on.

However, all other browsers work no problem, like Firefox, Edge or Chrome...

Anyone encountering similar issue with Safari? 🤔

Basically title - will anyone be able to see what I up- and downvoted?

757

I read that they "defederated"... What does this mean? And why did they do this? And what are the consequences?

758

Is there a way to find these communities across instances other than by waiting until a post appears?

759

I'm sure this has been asked and answered before but I can't find it.

How do I subscribe to a community from another instance? I read you just search communities with the url of the community you want to join, but that didn't work for me. Even with variations in formatting: !community@instance, for example.

Perhaps there should be a sticky somewhere that explains the slight complexities of the fediverse since it's clearly a bit foreign to most users. I've been on lemmy for over a year and I'm constantly discovering functionality I was unaware of thanks to all the new lemons coming in and asking questions.

Is there a way to automate community discovery across the federation?

I started my own lemmy but I'm finding I have to search for and subscribe manually for them to appear. Right now I'm the only person on my lemmy so its gonna be slow going till I grow my community.

Is there an automated way to do this?

Also, are there any good bot scripts for lemmy? I want to get some bots set up to create some daily posts automatically.

761

Might be a dumb question, but I mod a few subs and wanted to clarify something. If I block a random user on my account, will I see their posts in the communities I moderate? It dawned on me that I might be missing bad behavior because I can't see it.

I'm impressed that Lemmy only needs 150 MB RAM and uses virtually no CPU

This seems like an ideal thing to install on an embedded system such as a Raspberry Pi.

Problem: Where are the builds?

In the installation page, you have three options: Docker, Ansible, From Scratch

I'm currently doing the from scratch option since my OS distributor is not a fan of docker or ansible (and neither am I), but the build is taking ~1hr.

Are there no nightly builds with .deb packages?

I guess I should try @lemmy

There is a new Lemmy app called Memmy in alpha right now!

It's being made by @gkd and has a repo up at https://github.com/gkasdorf/memmy/

Hey guys, as I'm sure many of you are already aware there's a couple of bugs that are plaguing the home page. I've made a hotfix for these bugs:

  1. New posts popping up and pushing all the other posts downwards - this is more prevalent on the larger lemmy instances, you'll just be scrolling and suddenly everything's pushed down because new posts are being added to the top of the page as they're being created
  2. Default "All" not working - this is more something admins would be aware of but in the site settings you can set the default "Listing Type" to "All" instead of "Local", but if you do this the home page doesn't properly load "All", it'll show you the "Local" feed with "All" selected in the tabs. Seems this feature wasn't implemented correctly in time for 0.17.4

Since 0.18 is still a little while out, and I'm sure the devs are both really busy on it (they also said they won't be making another 0.17 release), I went ahead and made a hotfix for these. I have it up on jcgurango/lemmy-ui:0.17.4-hotfix so if you're using docker you can just upgrade to that image. I'm not really sure how ansible works, so I can't help with that.

Here's the repo I have these changes on for those who want to check or build it themselves: https://github.com/jcgurango/lemmy-ui - I've based it on the v0.17.4 tag on the upstream repo.

Consistency

As you may know, a message written in one Reddit client doesn't display the same in another. Here's an example:

Example

```
First line
Second line
```

reddit.com and the official app both render this correctly:

First line
Second line

old.reddit.com, however, renders everything on one line:

First line Second line

They also differ in how they render subscripts with parentheses (a^(\(b\))), nested subscripts (a^b^c), and code blocks and lists that immediately follow text.

Lemmy doesn't have these issues, since its Markdown specification is clearly defined.

Images

On Reddit, if you want to add images to a text post, you have to use the Fancy Pants editor on reddit.com. If you attempt to edit such a post on the official app, a third-party app, old.reddit.com or the mobile site, these images simply turn into links. Additionally, you can't attach images in comments.

Lemmy lets you attach images from anywhere, including comments.

This troll used an admin name with one more letter. How do we deal with admin identity theft? Should instance admins reserve usernames preemptively? This troll will likely try u/Desssalines or something similar next. Maybe mod/admin flairs should be more flashy to avoid such confusions?

Why does searching for lemmy content on mastodon.social, such as a search for [@lemmy](https://lemmy.ml/c/lemmy) or [@liaizon](https://social.wake.st/@liaizon)/110530316373516739, produce zero results? Some of the content is accessible through this instance, e.g. https://mastodon.social/@liaizon@wake.st/110530316373516739, it's just not findable with search, and some of it redirects when accessed in that way.

I'm serious. Specially, the community - you folks, no matter the instance, you rock. You're amazing.

In Reddit it's always a struggle to word your posts/comments in a way that it won't trigger

  • unwarranted assumptions popping out of nowhere
  • "I dun unrurrstand" meaning "I disagree but I'm pretending that you aren't following any logic"
  • "You're saying that because..." [insert insane troll logic] everywhere
  • "U think dat 50 is not 100? Than u think 50 is 0! Dats stupid lol" tier oversimplifications all the fucking time.
  • insert random distortion of what you said, either due to malice or stupidity

Here though? People actually disagree with each other on rational = human grounds. They aren't attacking each other, they're agreeing or disagreeing with what is said!

It's specially noteworthy that even Lemmygrad's community specifically tailored for Leftist infighting is more wholesome than non-discussion subreddits. Like, it's a server made for people with strong political opinions, a community made to let them fight, and yet they can reason better than Reddit.

Please keep being awesome.

It would be awesome with more people helping to answer questions in !lemmy_support@lemmy.ml, this is one of the first places people head with their issues. You can always just subscribe and consider helping next time you see a post from there.

I hope I see more and more subreddits go dark indefinitely!

So I got this instance up yesterday and I didn't (still don't) really understand federation.

Does any one have a tutorial or an explainer I could tuck into that can help me figure out how to effectively federate/ connect to other lemmy instances?

For example, I connected to !memes!memes@lemmy.ml. It appears to now be 'federated', in that when I look at 'all communities' on !wsb_memes@wallstreets.bet , then I see posts. Whats weird though, is that they are all 18 hours behind, and have no activity.

I really want to support the growth of the lemmy verse. I think the best way to do this is with unique, niche focused federated instances for 'groups' of specific interests. wallstreets.bet is how I thought I could support that. But I'm struggling with the federation aspect and I'm not sure its working correctly.

I created the Powerlifting community on lemmy.ml but I'm not seeing any of the mod actions listed here when I click the ellipses under a post:

https://join-lemmy.org/docs/en/users/04-moderation.html

Does this instance have those disabled?

Crosslinking (lemmy.ml)

I have an account on lemmy.ml, as you can all see.

My partner has an account on lemmy.world

When I link a post, let's say this one I picked at random, it is a link to a specific post ID on lemmy.ml

If I send this to my partner, as I do with a lot of things we both enjoy, they will be able to read it, but not reply/respond, as they don't have a lemmy.ml account. The post ID for the same post is different via lemmy.world, obviously.

This post even originated on lemmy.world, sort of, as it's poster is from there.

We send each other links like this all the time, and on reddit or hacker news, that's not a problem. There can be only one HN, after all. Lemmy is not so monolithic, and it looks like this is a serious downside.

I can't reply to other instances than my "home instance", and I can't easily discover what the post ID for this post is on my home instance, so my interaction/"engagement" is probably going to be very low for things I didn't discover myself.

Am I missing some functionality here?

[Edit: I no English berry good.]
