They're usually priced at a loss to drive up the amount of purchases on these platforms. The entire business model is messed up.

Yup. There's a lot of uneven things about the playing field between American and Chinese businesses. The subsidized shipping is one of the biggest advantages for Chinese companies. Think about it. I buy a product from AliExpress or whatever for $1.99 that they manufactured for pennies and the Chinese government covers all or most of the shipping cost. Then, whether I bought something for $1.99 or $50, if it's defective, does it really matter if they accept returns? Am I really going to pay a buh-zillion bucks to return it to China?
