I would like to spend 2-3 weeks in Japan preferably Fukuoka. My birthday is coming up…..I would love to treat myself since I have always wanted to visit Japan. Although, I have never been to Japan before but something about big cities has never been something that I enjoy. Lol. I feel lost as if I am in a complicated maze. So Tokyo is out of my list.

  1. Are there mid size cities you can recommend?

  2. Has anyone been to Fukuoka?

  3. Any other helpful tips is quite appreciated

Anything to know about accommodations in Japan ? I’m okay spending a bit more, but even outside of Tokyo I can’t seem to find a reasonable place I’d be willing to stay in. I work 40-50 hours a week and every place just looks too small.

If you don't like big crowded cities I'd recommend Hiroshima and Fukuoka. Lived in both and they are great!

If you want to do a bit more tourism, Hiroshima might be better. But if you want to go out and have great food, I'd recommend Fukuoka.

Why not do both though? You can get a Shinkansen for less than 100$ and it takes a bit more than one hour.

Hey, so, I lived in Japan 8 years and before that, did a lot of backpacking around these parts.

Not saying anyone else's suggestion is bad, plenty of good stuff in that post, but here's one I just don't see often enough: if you can, and especially if you are in Fukuoka, try to spend a few days at the southernmost tip of Kyushu, around Kagoshima.

Nature there is absolutely unbelievable, especially around Sakurajima, and the local culture is in complete contrast with more mainland-ish "Tokaido" culture. It's a trip inside a trip.

Bro, I’m about to publish a full video about living Fukuoka! I spend last month with 40 nomads doing a project called Colive Fukuoka. welcome to check my YouTube channel “sergiosala” to see the video soon!

Fukuoka is a great choice! It has a more laidback vibe compared to Tokyo but still has plenty to see and do. Enjoy your birthday trip!
