Comic Strips is a community for those who love comic stories.

Rules
  1. πŸ˜‡ Be Nice!

    • Treat others with respect and dignity. Friendly banter is okay, as long as it is mutual; keyword: friendly.
  2. 🏘️ Community Standards

    • Comics should be a full story, from start to finish, in one post.
    • Posts should be safe and enjoyable by the majority of community members, both here on lemmy.world and other instances.
    • Any comic that would qualify as raunchy, lewd, or otherwise draw unwanted attention by nosy coworkers, spouses, or family members should be tagged as NSFW.
    • Moderators have final say on what and what does not qualify as appropriate. Use common sense, and if need be, err on the side of caution.
  3. 🧬 Keep it Real

    • Comics should be made and posted by real human beans, not by automated means like bots or AI. This is not the community for that sort of thing.
  4. πŸ“½οΈ Credit Where Credit is Due

    • Comics should include the original attribution to the artist(s) involved, and be unmodified. Bonus points if you include a link back to their website. When in doubt, use a reverse image search to try to find the original version. Repeat offenders will have their posts removed, be temporarily banned from posting, or if all else fails, be permanently banned from posting.
    • Attributions include, but are not limited to, watermarks, links, or other text or imagery that artists add to their comics to use for identification purposes. If you find a comic without any such markings, it would be a good idea to see if you can find an original version. If one cannot be found, say so and ask the community for help!
  5. πŸ“‹ Post Formatting

    • Post an image, gallery, or link to a specific comic hosted on another site; e.g., the author's website.
    • Meta posts about the community should be tagged with [Meta] either at the beginning or the end of the post title.
    • When linking to a comic hosted on another site, ensure the link is to the comic itself and not just to the website; e.g.,
      βœ… Correct: https://xkcd.com/386/
      ❌ Incorrect: https://xkcd.com/
  6. πŸ“¬ Post Frequency/SPAM

    • Each user (regardless of instance) may post up to five (5 πŸ–) comics a day. This can be any combination of personal comics you have written yourself, or other author's comics. Any comics exceeding five (5 πŸ–) will be removed.
  7. πŸ΄β€β˜ οΈ Internationalization (i18n)

    • Non-English posts are welcome. Please tag the post title with the original language, and include an English translation in the body of the post; e.g.,
      SΓ, por favor [Spanish/EspaΓ±ol]
  8. 🍿 Moderation

    • We are human, just like most everybody else on Lemmy. If you feel a moderation decision was made in error, you are welcome to reach out to anybody on the moderation team for clarification. Keep in mind that moderation decisions may be final.
    • When reporting posts and/or comments, quote which rule is being broken, and why you feel it broke the rules.
Banned Artists

The following artists are banned from the community.

  1. Jago
  2. Stonetoss
  3. GPrime85

It should be noted that when you make reports, it is your responsibility to provide rational reasoning why something should be removed. Saying it simply breaks community rules is not always good enough.

Web Accessibility

Note: This is not a rule, but a helpful suggestion.

When posting images, you should strive to add alt-text for screen readers to use to describe the image you're posting:

Another helpful thing to do is to provide a transcription of the text in your images, as well as brief descriptions of what's going on. (example)

Can somebody explain the red XXX blinking and the whole last panel? Does that reference some TV show I don't know?

TIA

[–] Tai@piefed.world 13 points 4 hours ago

It's referencing the game show Family Feud. They ask a whole bunch of people a question, in this case it's what will you be when you grow up? Then the contestants need to guess what the most responded answers were. They're allowed three wrong guesses before the other team gets a chance to jump in and try to answer.

Hey now there are about 148 left in the United States and almost that many total in other countries

[–] Kolanaki@pawb.social 5 points 6 hours ago

I would have been a great spongmonkey.

[–] naticus@lemmy.world 1 points 4 hours ago

Lol right? How old is this one?

Apartment in the city that a an "ok musician" can afford? Now that's a funny joke.

Maybe if they have rich parents.

[–] scutiger@lemmy.world 1 points 3 hours ago

You can get a job in the military as a musician right out of high school and make a livable wage with a pension. You don't have to be great at it.

If your personal ethics allow it of course.

Perfectly doable if that apartment also has 12 other people in it and only one bathroom.

[–] zeejoo@thelemmy.club 13 points 7 hours ago (1 children)

Or if you have a time machine and can go back to 1974

Friends was fucking wild. So so musician, waitress, and idk what the fuck half of em did, but they all had sick condos and apartments and had time to meet up for breakfast in the morning

Of the ones you couldn't name: one of them was an archeologist and professor, one of them was a successful working actor, one of them was a private chef with a catering business. So all doing pretty well for themselves, by all accounts

[–] cannedtuna@lemmy.world 3 points 5 hours ago (1 children)

Either way, I am thoroughly jealous of their TV portrayal of financial status and friend proximity. Honestly if I could have breakfast with friends on the daily and hang at a coffee shop in the evenings most days I’d be pretty happy.

[–] Hanrahan@lemmy.world 2 points 1 hour ago

at the time i remember an article that estimated they'd need $150k wage to live like that. That was decades ago, so not sure what the equivalent would be now?

[–] marcos@lemmy.world 4 points 6 hours ago (1 children)

The last one might be able to rent an apartment some 10km of that area...

With that last one they actually went out of their way to explain how she could afford that apartment and it was basically the old "pretending my grandma isn't dead to keep the fixed rental rate" game.

I think that’s the real issue here. If you’re wealthy, this is perfectly doable.

From what I see it’s an paradox, where the jobs that don’t make much money (artists/teachers) tend to attract wealthy people and the high paying jobs (engineers/scientists) tend to be lower class people who need high paying jobs

It is hard as an artist seeing your friends who started out in the same circles as you, doing effortlessly well with the parental support that they have. You can't resent them for it because why would you, if your parents were able, they'd do the same.

But you thought you were equals, starving as martyrs for your respective passions.... but, they had a parachute and you didn't.
