Rules (2024-08-30)

  1. This is an English-language community. Comments should be in English. Posts can link to non-English news sources when providing a full-text translation in the post description. Automated translations are fine, as long as they don't overly distort the content.
  2. No links to misinformation or commercial advertising. When you post outdated/historic articles, add the year of publication to the post title. Infographics must include a source and a year of creation; if possible, also provide a link to the source.
  3. Be kind to each other, and argue in good faith. Don't post direct insults nor disrespectful and condescending comments. Don't troll nor incite hatred. Don't look for novel argumentation strategies at Wikipedia's List of fallacies.
  4. No bigotry, sexism, racism, antisemitism, islamophobia, dehumanization of minorities, or glorification of National Socialism. We follow German law; don't question the statehood of Israel.
  5. Be the signal, not the noise: Strive to post insightful comments. Add "/s" when you're being sarcastic (and don't use it to break rule no. 3).
  6. If you link to paywalled information, please provide also a link to a freely available archived version. Alternatively, try to find a different source.
  7. Light-hearted content, memes, and posts about your European everyday belong in other communities.
  8. Don't evade bans. If we notice ban evasion, that will result in a permanent ban for all the accounts we can associate with you.
  9. No posts linking to speculative reporting about ongoing events with unclear backgrounds. Please wait at least 12 hours. (E.g., do not post breathless reporting on an ongoing terror attack.)
  10. Always provide context with posts: Don't post uncontextualized images or videos, and don't start discussions without giving some context first.

(This list may get expanded as necessary.)

Posts that link to the following sources will be removed

Unless they're the only sources, please also avoid The Sun, Daily Mail, any "thinktank" type organization, and non-Lemmy social media (incl. Substack). Don't link to Twitter directly, instead use xcancel.com. For Reddit, use old:reddit:com

(Lists may get expanded as necessary.)

Ban lengths, etc.

We will use some leeway to decide whether to remove a comment.

If need be, there are also bans: 3 days for lighter offenses, 7 or 14 days for bigger offenses, and permanent bans for people who don't show any willingness to participate productively. If we think the ban reason is obvious, we may not specifically write to you.

If you want to protest a removal or ban, feel free to write privately to the admin that applied the rule (check modlog first to find who was it.)

Portuguese people HATE fascists. You don't even have to be that old in Portugal to remember living under a fascist dictator.

But I guess that doesn't stop the lunatic fringe.

Also, most Portuguese people look hispanic so I really wonder how an ICE-like force there would go...

[–] sparky@lemmy.federate.cc 28 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (1 children)

Hi from Portugal. Chega (far right) is a major party in parliament right now (1/3) and arguably PSD (another 1/3) has gone far right lately especially on immigration. So we basically have two out of three parties who are far-right.

One of them even talked in parliament about β€œdiluting Portuguese blood” and β€œkeeping Portugal for the Portuguese”, right before they voted to retroactively prevent all the foreigners from being allowed to apply for nationality, and prevent most of the southeast Asians from being eligible to renew their residency.

They are also talking about trying to amend the constitution, not to put anything good in there.

So uh, you sure about that?

[–] wonderingwanderer@sopuli.xyz 5 points 2 days ago (3 children)

Hi, thanks for the info. That's uhh, concerning.

I guess the far right is on the rise everywhere, but I would have thought it would get quashed when the world saw the US go ass up. Unfortunately, it seems I was wrong.

When I was in Portugal not that long ago, everyone I talked to seemed to be fairly anti-fascist. But maybe there was some selection bias at play.

I don't know what else to tell you. It sucks watching one's country slide into fascism. It sucks watching the world slide into fascism. I wish I had better answers than that...

[–] kyub@discuss.tchncs.de 1 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

These things take time. Unfortunately, life still isn't bad enough for the average American, so shit can still go on like this without any revolts. And as long as that's not happening, this shit can still happen to many countries before people learn again.

[–] grranibal@lemmy.zip 5 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Hey! Another input from a Portuguese (without any meaningful information, just my vibes and feelings): Regarding your selection bias, up until recently I think a lot of people were ashamed of being fascist (I only met one teacher that said β€œβ€¦ but our past dictator made Portugal rich!!!”), so most people would pretend to align with anti fascism. Nowadays it has been normalized and people yell bs without hesitating :(

I believe that we will have a fascist revolution before de-fascistizing the country. I just hope I can retire and live peacefully in a non-fascist Portugal :(

(Sorry if my comment is confusing, I just woke up and this post made me sad :( I felt the need to comment)

Thanks for your input. I always appreciate a local's perspective.

That makes sense I think. It's a lot like what happened in the US. The fascists were always there, but whether they were ashamed or not they knew better than to be out in the open with it. Now, they feel like they have permission, and its been masks-off.

I hope everyone gets to retire and live peacefully in a non-fascist world. I don't know how many generations it will be before that's possible though. I used to believe that good will always prevail, but now I'm under no such pretenses. The universe has no moral bias, unfortunately...

[–] sparky@lemmy.federate.cc 6 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Yeah, it’s not great. Seems to be a trend all over the world :(

[–] trackball_fetish@lemmy.wtf 4 points 2 days ago (1 children)

It's planned. Basically a decentralized neo axis. Thats the fun part seem to leave out regarding epstein, he discusses implementing governmental manipulation all starting at brexit.. I feel like a damn crazy person (well, more crazy) yelling about this but it seems like everyone's busy or just ignoring it

[–] Tryenjer@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (1 children)

It can't be that crazy if you have some kind of proof. I had the displeasure of reading some of the files published by the American government, which seem to corroborate what you are saying.

The messages I'm referencing were released via his estate by subpoena, by the house oversight committee. They are instant messages via whatever osx has by default (iChat?). Its really insane to me no one has pointed it out elsewhere. Anyway if you want to go through them they can be grabbed here. They are all in .txt format.

He also had multiple books in his digital files, a lot of them relating to AGI, among other things.

[–] Tryenjer@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

I'm Portuguese. I wish that were true, but unfortunately it isn't. Currently at least 1/3 of Portuguese people love fascism. Ventura, leader of the far-right Chega party, has even stated that Portugal needs not one but three Salazars without losing popularity for it. Currently, they are the second most voted party, having surpassed the PS (center-left) in the last elections. And the ruling party, PSD, supposedly center-right, has been adopting increasingly extreme measures in an attempt to compete with its newest rival.

P.S.: By the way, looking hispanic isn't very relevant here. The concept of "white" in Europe is different from that used in North America. Fascists here generally prefer to use the name of the largest ethnic group in the country they are in instead of "white" as the superior group. "White" here is even used in certain more radical circles to refer to a mixed person of different European "races" who cannot trace their ancestry to a single "pure" nationality. Basically, many "white" Americans could be seen as "mutts" by some of these lunatics.

[–] lemonwood@lemmy.ml 3 points 1 day ago (1 children)

What happened to all the fascists after the dictatorship? Did they magically disappear?

Apparently they crawled into their holes and hid until they felt like it was safe to come out

[–] huppakee@lemmy.world 7 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I feel like their racism is selective enough to consider Portuguese-looking Portuguese in Portugal as "okay" and Portuguese-looking Mexicans with the same exact skin colour in the US as not okay, does that make sense?

I don't know, all three Portuguese guys in that picture are white-passing.

Which, if it's any surprise, is more common among the upper-class in Portugal. Shocker, I know...

[–] teyrnon@sh.itjust.works -2 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Portuguese people do not look hispanic, they can be swarthy, like all mediteranian peoples in southern europe. They are not all that swarthy either in comparison. Maybe they had some hispanics emmigrate, it's a minority.

[–] Leomas@lemmy.world 0 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Fuck you you racist piece of shit.

[–] teyrnon@sh.itjust.works 0 points 20 hours ago (1 children)

Recognizing facts about countries including demographics is not Racist, you cynical fucking piece of shit

[–] Leomas@lemmy.world 0 points 20 hours ago (2 children)

Demographics? Did I miss your population and birth-rate calculations in the comment I replied to? You were talking about Portuguese people not being Hispanic. Did you notice Spain is in that word? The word Hispanic means spanish-speaking people. "Swarthiness" or any physical appearance has nothing to do with being Hispanic. Spain and Portugal are neighbours if you didn't know and there is no Chinese wall between the two countries. So yes, you saying Portuguese people have certain physical attributes is by definition racist. So yes, fuck you you racist piece of shit. And apparently you're also stupid, since I had to explain this shit to yoi. And you probably still don't get it you idiot.

[–] teyrnon@sh.itjust.works 1 points 17 hours ago (1 children)

Read the Wikipedia link Jesus christ.

[–] Leomas@lemmy.world 0 points 16 hours ago (1 children)

I don't care about your wikipedia link, can you read? I told you I'm talking about what I'm responding to. I'm not reading your other bullshit. I tried making arguments, you told me you won't read it, you're pathetic, give up trying to look like you're the one being reasonable.

[–] teyrnon@sh.itjust.works 1 points 14 hours ago

Uhh, what? You are arguing that the portuguese are hispanic, and I''m racist for calling bullshit. GTFO.

[–] teyrnon@sh.itjust.works 1 points 19 hours ago (1 children)

I'm not reading this drivel, you know God damn well Hispanic is also used In reference to brazil, And you know God damn well The Portuguese are European.

This is too fucking stupid to argue and your comment is too fucking stupid to read fuck off please thank you.

[–] Leomas@lemmy.world 1 points 17 hours ago (1 children)

You telling me to I can't read after saying you won't read my medium length racism for dummies explanation is hilarious, like seriously, are you a 12 year old Tik Tok addict or something?

[–] Leomas@lemmy.world 1 points 17 hours ago

You can't be a chatbot of course, Grok might be as racist, but it might be smart enough to at least have an argument.

[–] wonderingwanderer@sopuli.xyz -1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Somebody's never been to Portugal...

[–] teyrnon@sh.itjust.works 1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I looked it up too, after the fact, and I'm right. I don't know where you got that from, it's incorrect.

[–] wonderingwanderer@sopuli.xyz -1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I don't know where you got that from, it's incorrect.

Oh I don't know I've only been to Portugal and talked to Portuguese people. They don't all look hispanic, and I never said they did, but there certainly are many Portuguese people who look hispanic.

But you "looked it up," so you know better I guess...

[–] teyrnon@sh.itjust.works -2 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (2 children)

I'm sure they have a sizable number of immigrants from Hispanic countries. How would that even work? Where you think the Portuguese are Hispanic? Like, I wouldn't even know where to start on that. Seriously bro.

Edit: here is Wikipedia with the statistics, 35% of their immigrant population is hispanic, and it is sizable, not the largest.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Immigration_to_Portugal

[–] Knock_Knock_Lemmy_In@lemmy.world 0 points 1 day ago (1 children)

The word Hispanic doesn't appear in that article.

Maybe you think Brazilians are Hispanic? They are not, as they speak Portuguese not Spanish. (Brazilians are Latino though).

[–] teyrnon@sh.itjust.works 1 points 1 day ago (2 children)

You're just moving the fucking goal post because you are wrong, and you were raised not to admit when you were wrong. Apparently.

[–] Knock_Knock_Lemmy_In@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I just jumped in to correct your misunderstanding of the word Hispanic.

Neither Portuguese nor Brazilians are Spanish.

[–] teyrnon@sh.itjust.works 0 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Get the fuck out of here, the Portuguese are not now nor have they ever been hispanic, they are European. Now, piss off.

[–] Knock_Knock_Lemmy_In@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (1 children)

I'm just wondering where you get this statistic from

35% of their immigrant population is hispanic

You seem to think Brazil is a Hispanic nation.

[–] teyrnon@sh.itjust.works 1 points 20 hours ago (1 children)
[–] Knock_Knock_Lemmy_In@lemmy.world 0 points 20 hours ago (1 children)

Which had 0% Hispanic immigrants.

[–] teyrnon@sh.itjust.works 1 points 17 hours ago

Wikipedia? How dare you sir, alleging Wikipedia has no Hispanics. You racist./s

Pure projection from someone who can't admit that he's wrong.

Are you a closet right-winger, by chance?

[–] wonderingwanderer@sopuli.xyz -1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Oh, well see, when I'm in Portugal and I meet people who speak perfect Portuguese and understand the culture perfectly and have lived there for years and integrated perfectly, I tend to think they're Portuguese.

If you disagree, then you might have more in common with Chega than you realize...

[–] teyrnon@sh.itjust.works 0 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Oh rather, so your point here is that Portuguese are hispanic? Please let me know what is your fucking point here? Because get the fuck out of here you're wrong and fuck you with all due respect.

[–] wonderingwanderer@sopuli.xyz 0 points 1 day ago (1 children)

That's not what I said at all. And you're severely overreacting to the situation.

You didn't have to respond if you didn't want to, so how about you "get the fuck out of here"?

You're the one who's wrong anyway. You've never even been to Portugal and you're trying to tell me Portuguese people all look white?

Fuck you. On behalf of all non-white Portuguese people, fuck you.

[–] teyrnon@sh.itjust.works 0 points 1 day ago (1 children)

By default, Portuguese people are white, fuck you.

[–] wonderingwanderer@sopuli.xyz -1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Why are you so obsessed with adding bioessentialism and racist takes to this? You think someone who isn't white can't be Portuguese? You sound like a fascist.

[–] teyrnon@sh.itjust.works 0 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Get the fuck out of here. Seriously giddy up.

[–] wonderingwanderer@sopuli.xyz -1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

You can leave any time you want

[–] teyrnon@sh.itjust.works 0 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I do not even know what you are talking about, Bur the portuguese are white..

[–] wonderingwanderer@sopuli.xyz -1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

You've literally never been to Portugal.

Also, stop being racist.

[–] teyrnon@sh.itjust.works 0 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Projection, much?
