Rules (2024-08-30)

  1. This is an English-language community. Comments should be in English. Posts can link to non-English news sources when providing a full-text translation in the post description. Automated translations are fine, as long as they don't overly distort the content.
  2. No links to misinformation or commercial advertising. When you post outdated/historic articles, add the year of publication to the post title. Infographics must include a source and a year of creation; if possible, also provide a link to the source.
  3. Be kind to each other, and argue in good faith. Don't post direct insults nor disrespectful and condescending comments. Don't troll nor incite hatred. Don't look for novel argumentation strategies at Wikipedia's List of fallacies.
  4. No bigotry, sexism, racism, antisemitism, islamophobia, dehumanization of minorities, or glorification of National Socialism. We follow German law; don't question the statehood of Israel.
  5. Be the signal, not the noise: Strive to post insightful comments. Add "/s" when you're being sarcastic (and don't use it to break rule no. 3).
  6. If you link to paywalled information, please provide also a link to a freely available archived version. Alternatively, try to find a different source.
  7. Light-hearted content, memes, and posts about your European everyday belong in other communities.
  8. Don't evade bans. If we notice ban evasion, that will result in a permanent ban for all the accounts we can associate with you.
  9. No posts linking to speculative reporting about ongoing events with unclear backgrounds. Please wait at least 12 hours. (E.g., do not post breathless reporting on an ongoing terror attack.)
  10. Always provide context with posts: Don't post uncontextualized images or videos, and don't start discussions without giving some context first.

(This list may get expanded as necessary.)

Posts that link to the following sources will be removed

Unless they're the only sources, please also avoid The Sun, Daily Mail, any "thinktank" type organization, and non-Lemmy social media (incl. Substack). Don't link to Twitter directly, instead use xcancel.com. For Reddit, use old:reddit:com

(Lists may get expanded as necessary.)

Ban lengths, etc.

We will use some leeway to decide whether to remove a comment.

If need be, there are also bans: 3 days for lighter offenses, 7 or 14 days for bigger offenses, and permanent bans for people who don't show any willingness to participate productively. If we think the ban reason is obvious, we may not specifically write to you.

If you want to protest a removal or ban, feel free to write privately to the admin that applied the rule (check modlog first to find who was it.)

And the people who show up should be noted because they represent the fascist and neo- nazi part of Europe.

[–] Magnum@infosec.pub 1 points 1 day ago

You mean Portugal right?

Is this the beginning of a gay porn? Kinda seems that way. But might wanna watch out with those shoe lengths, bovvie, your gonna be a sheep taking it from a moose.

[–] Amberskin@europe.pub 15 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Why isn’t that fascist piece of shit banned from entry in the Schengen area??

[–] Tryenjer@lemmy.world 10 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

Because unfortunately we are also full of them on this side of the Atlantic. Chega is already the second most voted party in Portugal and supports the Reconquista group, whose leader, Afonso Gonçalves, is the guy on the right in the image above.

This time the disease appears to be spreading from the new world to the old one. There are many pro-Trump Luso-American businessmen investing in Chega.

P.S.: We'll see what the reaction of these idiots will be the day that the dementia reminds Trump that he would like to turn the Azores into an Eastern Hawaii. After the Greenland controversy, it doesn't seem like such an impossible scenario.

Because fascism is right at home in Europe?

[–] teyrnon@sh.itjust.works 11 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Bovino is only 5 foot tall, so he rounded up three other of the shortest dudes he could find for this picture, how vain.

[–] 4grams@awful.systems 8 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Those boots.. dude is on tiptoes, still looks tiny.

[–] nomy@lemmy.zip 1 points 1 day ago

Dude just hanging out in his skinny jeans amd lift-boots.

[–] ProfThadBach@lemmy.world 5 points 1 day ago

Just a reminder that Bovino's parents live in Blowing Rock, NC and he spends a lot of time there. Do with that what you will.

How did he find that many people as short as himself?

[–] Kwakigra@beehaw.org 4 points 1 day ago

I looked up the event to see that it is indeed a literal white nationalist conference. I won't link it out of principal but the tagline for the event is:

Shaping the future of Europe and the West through sovereignty, identity, and demographic renewal.

Portuguese people you know what to do.

What the fuck is going on? So that photo is for real? Am I dying? What's wrong with his fucking legs? That's not what legs do. Why does that guy have clown shoes? WHY?!

[–] teyrnon@sh.itjust.works 7 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (1 children)

It's always sunny vibes, the pedophile uncle of charlie obsessed with his small hands, wearing fake large hands.

Bovino is only 5 foot tall so he's likely self conscious about his, er, sizes, and got some oversized clown shoes like whatshis face, the woke guy, Desantis. He did something similar with his boots to look bigger.

Pathetic.

[–] bold_atlas@lemmy.world 4 points 1 day ago (1 children)

These people are like if Tim and Eric photo manips come to life. It's surreal. I feel like i'm stroking out every time look a politics feed.

Portuguese people HATE fascists. You don't even have to be that old in Portugal to remember living under a fascist dictator.

But I guess that doesn't stop the lunatic fringe.

Also, most Portuguese people look hispanic so I really wonder how an ICE-like force there would go...

[–] sparky@lemmy.federate.cc 28 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (8 children)

Hi from Portugal. Chega (far right) is a major party in parliament right now (1/3) and arguably PSD (another 1/3) has gone far right lately especially on immigration. So we basically have two out of three parties who are far-right.

One of them even talked in parliament about “diluting Portuguese blood” and “keeping Portugal for the Portuguese”, right before they voted to retroactively prevent all the foreigners from being allowed to apply for nationality, and prevent most of the southeast Asians from being eligible to renew their residency.

They are also talking about trying to amend the constitution, not to put anything good in there.

So uh, you sure about that?

I'm Portuguese. I wish that were true, but unfortunately it isn't. Currently at least 1/3 of Portuguese people love fascism. Ventura, leader of the far-right Chega party, has even stated that Portugal needs not one but three Salazars without losing popularity for it. Currently, they are the second most voted party, having surpassed the PS (center-left) in the last elections. And the ruling party, PSD, supposedly center-right, has been adopting increasingly extreme measures in an attempt to compete with its newest rival.

P.S.: By the way, looking hispanic isn't very relevant here. The concept of "white" in Europe is different from that used in North America. Fascists here generally prefer to use the name of the largest ethnic group in the country they are in instead of "white" as the superior group. "White" here is even used in certain more radical circles to refer to a mixed person of different European "races" who cannot trace their ancestry to a single "pure" nationality. Basically, many "white" Americans could be seen as "mutts" by some of these lunatics.

[–] lemonwood@lemmy.ml 3 points 1 day ago (1 children)

What happened to all the fascists after the dictatorship? Did they magically disappear?

[–] wonderingwanderer@sopuli.xyz 3 points 1 day ago

Apparently they crawled into their holes and hid until they felt like it was safe to come out

to say what "We made our country a shithole, and with our help, you can too!"?

[–] Gammelfisch@lemmy.world 22 points 2 days ago (1 children)

The same type of Portuguese that got their asses handed to them in Angola and Mozambique. The racist shitbag, Bovino, should have been denied entry into the EU or arrested and handed over to the ICC.

I honestly wonder if american white supremacists would consider Portuguese people to be white.

[–] UkrainianBull@reddthat.com 3 points 1 day ago

American white supremacists

[–] CyberEgg@discuss.tchncs.de 35 points 2 days ago (24 children)

Historically, even the "whiteness" of Irish was not always a thing in the US.

Here is an article about it that I found for further information: https://www.politico.eu/article/afd-vox-mingle-with-ex-us-border-patrol-chief-white-nationalist-leader-at-remigration-summit/

I don't love linking Politico, but it's the only English source I can find. Does anyone have a better one?

Edit: these other sources I just found are definitely heavily editorializing, but not in ways I disagree with LOL. They're more focused on Bovino specifically vs. the broader conference, so they don't replace the info in the Politico article, but I am also sharing:
