I just thought of something.

IEM's have so much bass impact, especially deep bass impact.

I wondered what a 10mm IEM dynamic driver equivalent would be in headphones? 100mm??

IEM's create a better isolation seal and are way in there in your ear canal so maybe comparing them to over 100mm headphone drivers is more accurate.

To be brief, my country has a small internal market, high tariffs and high VAT, meaning it's not easy to find stuff that isn't from giant manufacturers like Sony and what is available has a significantly higher price than in EU-NA.

I took the advice of the headphone buying guide lovingly prepared by lifelongcaboose and purchased a pair of Hyper X Cloud Orbit S for my fiancee as she wanted a gaming headset and her highest priority was sound quality. I now have them in hand and want to get the most out of them to wow her. What steps are reccomended to get the most out of them? Neither of us are trained or educated in the finer details of sound quality so many things will likely be missed, but I still want to hear what planar magnetic drivers can do and I want her to have the best experience. What I'm most curious about is things like software for EQ, the best option for source material and amplifiers.

The headset has both 3.5mm and USB options, and I have access to a Scarlett 2i4. She has only the onboard soundcard for her desktop so I am imagining 3.5mm to the Scarlett being fed from the computer would best, but that's only with my basic knowledge, I'm hoping for some input from you wonderful people.

Please let me know if there is more information needed and I can update.

Thank you all in advance and thank you for providing this wonderful community.

I know this is kind of an out there question, but I'm stumped. There are a type of headphones I always see when I fly but I can't find online. The over ear part looks similar to the Sony WH-1000XM5s. No noticeable brand. Coming out of the top of the ear cover you have a single chrome/stainless steel piece that branches into two parts over the head (these two parts have some kind of foam wrap on them). Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

So recently I purchased a few gaming headphones (Sony 3d Pulse + Arctis Nova Pro Wireless) as well as some regular headphones for streaming music off my phone (Bose QC Ultra + Sony XM5s). Like everyone I just googled PS5 headphones and bought what appeared to me to be the best options available.

However, I recently upgraded to a Smart TV which allows me to connect my XM5s + Boses directly to my TV and stream audio via bluetooth - and it works for games. This is awesome and is making me consider if I even need gaming headphones and should just use my music headphones / upgrade to some higher end headphones.

Here's the thing, I dont play online at all. I just play single player. I dont need a mic, and I do prefer low latency but I probably dont need ball-busting state of the art latency connections or w/e. What I do want is 1) the best audio quality possible, 2) 3d audio - which I'm still unclear as to whether this is supported by non gaming headphones connected directly to my TV.

I like the idea of having multiple devices paired at once (so I can speak on a call while having gaming sounds playing, or streaming YT as I play), but in reality I probably will never use it.

Can someone clarify? Debating whether to simply sell my existing 'gamer' headphones at this point. Will I lose out on 3d audio? Does 3d audio still work even when paired to the TV and not the console itself? Also, will the quality suffer if I stream audio from my TV and not the console itself?

Hey everybody, today I think I did a dumb thing with my Arya Stealth: I saw on the exterior of the left pad a piece of dirt (between the exterior metal grills and the foam that protects the driver) and I tried to pick it up with a pair of tweezers, but I didn’t take in account the “magnet” part of the driver, so the tweezers were attracted to the driver and made contact, even if softly.

I know planar magnetic drivers are fragile but I’m not an expert and so I’m asking you if there’s a change that I damaged the driver.. I can’t hear a difference in sound but I’m a bit worried.

Btw, the headphones weren’t connected to any source while doing this.

The place where the tweezers got attracted from is the one I highlighted in the picture, they made contact but I clearly didn’t push or anything, I then just pulled it off; is that middle part particularly fragile?

Out of curiosity , which headphones/headsets have the largest Ear Cups? From what I found,I saw that the Hifiman Ananda models had the largest, followed by the Audeze LCD line, but are there any models with even larger ear pads?

Thanks!

I designed and built my own planar ribbon drivers and made them into an iem! The whole thing took over two years and countless driver prototypes. Final product is a 2x 9.2mm dyanamic driver (in push-push configuration) for bass, and a dual planar ribbon driver for mids + highs. Sound is extremely clear and detailed, and bass extension is wow. The bass really feels like someone is punching your head.

I actually made two single driver full range prototypes before this, but the driver sensitivity isn't great, so the bass was very flat. I had to add dynamic drivers to get a bass shelf without killing the sensitivity.

Driver was very difficult to build, and I can't count how many different designs I've tested before ending up with this one. Ran into many obstacles, from what type of glue to use in certain places, the design of the traces, finding a factory capable of printint the diaphragm, and how to attach the lead wires on to the solder pads and diaphragm. I've mostly resorted to using silicon glue as it is more heat resistant and super glue will actually break the diaphragm. The driver can take a LOT of power, I can drive it on max volume on my AT-HA5000 for a long time without damaging it.

Why a planar ribbon? It was simply because I thought it'd be fun to build one since I haven't seen it done in an DIY IEM before.

Can the driver be mass produced? Probably not - it was very costly to make a single driver, and the successful rate of matching two drivers are pretty abysmal. The success rate of assembling the driver is actually VERY low considering that the diaphragm is printed and cut from a factory and pretty much all the parts are CNC'd for accuracy. Also, the treble is impossible to match, and many variables can change its response, including temperature, how much resin is used, or even if you looked at it the wrong way lol

Was it fun though? Yes! I'll keep working on the design improvements when I get the time (and money). I'd love to answer any questions if you guys have any :P

The dual planar ribbon driver

Final faceplate design. You can see the driver at the side.

Inside the IEM shell. Yes, it is a VERY large iem. UERM style connectors. Two vents - one front and one back.

Final FR measured with the clone IEC711 - treble resonance is sad but I'll need to do further driver design revisions to try to get rid of it. Can't really hear the resonance when listening to music though. IEM measures around 4 ohms (flat impedance curve).

So I wanted to share, in simple words, my opinion, as a total non-audiophile person. Yesterday I had an opportunity to listen to those 3 headphones. I spent around 2 h with them in total.

Little background: Until recently I had been using Sennheiser HD518 which I admit I’ve never really liked. I mostly used it to listen to music at work, so sound quality didn’t matter to me that much. But I gave them away, and have been looking for new headphones ever since. So far I’ve tried HD600, Sundara, Bayerdynamic DT770, HiFiMan Arya, Fiio FT3.

I listened in following order: Celestee > Clear > Stellia. They were paired with Naim Uniti Atom. I’m curious how much (if any) this amp had influence over sound quality.

Bottom line: I feel like I enjoyed Celestee the most. I was least impressed with Clears. Stellia for me fell somewhere in between. I had impression that Celestee’s sound was the warmest. I believe Stellia did better on tracks with prominent electric guitars. I was surprised because, while listening to Celestee I was able to pick up a lot of details and the sound felt spacious. After listening to Celestee, Clears and Stellia didn’t wowed me. After reading different opinions and reviews, I was expecting to like Clear the most.

Maybe the order in which I listened influenced my feelings. I don’t know. Very possible that I just don’t have audiophile ears. Also, 2 hours is probably too little time to really get to know those headphones.

Well, after having listen to a few headphones already, I’m none the wiser. None of the headphones I’ve tried so far blew me away. Yes, most of them sound nice or very nice, much, much better than my previous set (obviously). But I can’t point one clear favourite of mine.

I’ve narrowed down my search thanks to the help of others. If you would like to read my reasoning for no longer using my B&O H95s, you can read that here.

I’m now down to the following headphones:

  • Sennheiser Momentum 4s
  • Bose QC Ultras
  • Sony XM5s
  • B&W PX8s

I would love any more pieces of sage wisdom from anyone, any help narrowing down my choices, or any other suggestions. Thank you all!

Just for the sake of brevity, my budget maxes out at ~$800, with some room to stretch.

When I wear my noise cancelling headphones I don't feel anything physically at all, I don't feel cold or hot and I can't feel my legs when I'm walking it's like I'm hovering. Why is that?

So I'm new to headphones. I usually js buy cheap ass 30$ headphones that work pretty poorly. I want to try and upgrade a bit to some new ones. Music genres I listen to : Mostly metal/rock/punk (I listen to other types of music like jazz and shi but less often). I want it to both work outside and inside since I use it with my phone. Phone has no headphone jack but I think there's an adapter to make it into USB-C ? I ain't sure. Anyways my budget is around 100-250€ (I'm broke). Bands I listen to mostly: Deftones, Slipknot, Korn, Limp Bizkit, System of a Down, MCR, Linkin Park, Ice Nine Kills, Motionless in White, Pierce The Veil, The Cure and more
