Welcome to the News community!

Rules:

1. Be civil

Attack the argument, not the person. No racism/sexism/bigotry. Good faith argumentation only. This includes accusing another user of being a bot or paid actor. Trolling is uncivil and is grounds for removal and/or a community ban. Do not respond to rule-breaking content; report it and move on.

2. All posts should contain a source (url) that is as reliable and unbiased as possible and must only contain one link.

Obvious biased sources will be removed at the mods’ discretion. Supporting links can be added in comments or posted separately but not to the post body. Sources may be checked for reliability using Wikipedia, MBFC, AdFontes, GroundNews, etc.

3. No bots, spam or self-promotion.

Only approved bots, which follow the guidelines for bots set by the instance, are allowed.

4. Post titles should be the same as the article used as source. Clickbait titles may be removed.

Posts which titles don’t match the source may be removed. If the site changed their headline, we may ask you to update the post title. Clickbait titles use hyperbolic language and do not accurately describe the article content. When necessary, post titles may be edited, clearly marked with [brackets], but may never be used to editorialize or comment on the content.

5. Only recent news is allowed.

Posts must be news from the most recent 30 days.

6. All posts must be news articles.

No opinion pieces, Listicles, editorials, videos, blogs, press releases, or celebrity gossip will be allowed. All posts will be judged on a case-by-case basis. Mods may use discretion to pre-approve videos or press releases from highly credible sources that provide unique, newsworthy content not available or possible in another format.

7. No duplicate posts.

If an article has already been posted, it will be removed. Different articles reporting on the same subject are permitted. If the post that matches your post is very old, we refer you to rule 5.

8. Misinformation is prohibited.

Misinformation / propaganda is strictly prohibited. Any comment or post containing or linking to misinformation will be removed. If you feel that your post has been removed in error, credible sources must be provided.

9. No link shorteners or news aggregators.

All posts must link to original article sources. You may include archival links in the post description. News aggregators such as Yahoo, Google, Hacker News, etc. should be avoided in favor of the original source link. Newswire services such as AP, Reuters, or AFP, are frequently republished and may be shared from other credible sources.

10. Don't copy entire article in your post body

For copyright reasons, you are not allowed to copy an entire article into your post body. This is an instance wide rule, that is strictly enforced in this community.

In other news, the prisoners at Abu Ghraib were torturing themselves, the guards had nothing to do with it.

Does anyone really think ice isn’t torturing these people to death?

[–] backalleycoyote@lemmy.today 10 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Me, your average masochist on a random Wednesday. Y’all don’t enjoy a bit of ball torture with car batteries?

[–] prole@lemmy.blahaj.zone 3 points 1 day ago

The only thing the US military learned from that shit was how to not get caught as easily

[–] NatakuNox@lemmy.world 48 points 2 days ago (1 children)

You forget. America doesn't even see it's own citizens as humans to be valued. What do you think they think about none Americans. Its obvious to the world that America and everything it actually stands for is only providing for those with excess.

[–] tanisnikana@lemmy.world 32 points 2 days ago (1 children)

There are no American citizens, just American consumers and the American workforce.

[–] crusty@lemmy.dbzer0.com 5 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Don't forget the oligarchs!

[–] tanisnikana@lemmy.world 7 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Most of them aren’t American, one of them is South African.

Some are though, but they don’t really participate in America.

[–] NatakuNox@lemmy.world 5 points 1 day ago (1 children)

If Germany did send Trump's grandfather over here to infiltrate America and destroy it within. They were wildly successful.

[–] cmbabul@slrpnk.net 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Wouldn’t that plan have had to began in like the late 1800s? His father was born in the Bronx in 1905. Are you insinuating this started with Otto von Bismarck!?!

[–] ThunderclapSasquatch@startrek.website 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Shhh, batshit conspiracy theories are only bad if the wrong people say them.

[–] cmbabul@slrpnk.net 2 points 1 day ago

My gods! What have I wrought with my arrogance

[–] youcantreadthis@quokk.au 3 points 2 days ago

Think care whatever

[–] Lushed_Lungfish@lemmy.ca 73 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Ah... "suicide"... yes...

doubt

[–] glimse@lemmy.world 11 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Do you doubt that suicides are on the rise? I don't at all and I'd argue that's even worse than death from abuse or negligence.

I know we're comparing the lesser or two evils here but people choosing to take their own lives really stresses the direness of detention to me. They might get sent to another country. They may never get released. They are so hopeless, they'd rather die.

The culprit is the same so I'm not shifting blame. I just completely believe that people are killing themselves. If I was in their situation, I might, too.

[–] Jax@sh.itjust.works 22 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

Do you doubt that suicides are on the rise?

Nope. For reference, however, U.S. military personnel and defense contractors attempted to claim Abu Ghraib prisoners' injuries were 'self inflicted'. As in the prisoners were torturing themselves.

I sincerely doubt these "suicides" are being truthfully represented.

[–] ThePowerOfGeek@lemmy.world 72 points 2 days ago (1 children)

AP has the wrong word in apostrophes on this headline. It should read: ICE detainees are dying by 'suicide' at an alarming rate.

[–] Mouselemming@sh.itjust.works 18 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (3 children)

Agreed, except in the US we (edit: usually) use quotation marks for that, unless the whole thing is already in quotation marks.

ICE detainees are dying by "suicide" at an alarming rate.

I'm aware many other places use apostrophes, but ICE is a US peacecrime.

Tangential question, how many fingers do people use for "finger quotes" ('finger quotes') where you live?

[–] mastertigurius@lemmy.world 10 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (2 children)

Two, on just one hand. We're too lazy to lift both hands to quote someone, so the other hand stays firmly planted in the pocket (speaking on behalf of millions of Norwegians, of course).

[–] koella@lemmy.zip 4 points 2 days ago

I can confirm that 100% of Norwegians do this.

[–] Mouselemming@sh.itjust.works 2 points 2 days ago

Sensible! I use two on both hands, but that could either be because I live in a warm climate or because I'm old.

[–] ThePowerOfGeek@lemmy.world 3 points 2 days ago (1 children)

My understanding is that quotes are used to relay what someone said verbatim, and apostrophes are used to emphasize words, to quote them informally, or to express sarcasm. Even here in the US. But this differences have become fuzzy over time.

[–] Mouselemming@sh.itjust.works 2 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

Hmmm... In the article, 'alarming' (as written in the headline) turns out to be a direct quote from Dr. Sanjay Basu. But as you say, fuzzy.

[–] leftascenter@jlai.lu 2 points 2 days ago

I'm aware many other places use apostrophes, but ICE is a US peacecrime.

Which can be written about from other places. A better argument would be that AP is based in the US, yet they still use single quotation marks.

[–] WizardofFrobozz@lemmy.ca 2 points 1 day ago

Americans don’t give a shit

[–] obvs@lemmy.world 21 points 2 days ago (1 children)

~~ICE detainees are dying by suicide at an 'alarming' rate, an AP investigation finds~~

Ummm...

ICE detainees are dying by "suicide" at an 'alarming' rate, an AP investigation finds

[–] JustEnoughDucks@slrpnk.net 4 points 1 day ago

ICE "detainees" are dying by "suicide" at an "alarming" rate, and AP "investigation" finds.

The whole thing is pretty bad

[–] Rusticus@lemmy.world 6 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Wait, the ICE that’s filled with white supremacists are allowing detainees to commit suicide? I’m shocked. Now I suppose you’ll tell me that a vast majority of those that died are POC/minorities.
