Rules

This community is focused on games, of all kinds. Any news item or discussion should be related to gaming in some way.

2. No bigotry or harassment, be civil

No bigotry, hardline stance. Try not to get too heated when entering into a discussion or debate.

We are here to talk and discuss about one of our passions, not fight or be exposed to hate. Posts or responses that are hateful will be deleted to keep the atmosphere good. If repeatedly violated, not only will the comment be deleted but a ban will be handed out as well. We judge each case individually.

3. No excessive self-promotion

Try to keep it to 10% self-promotion / 90% other stuff in your post history.

This is to prevent people from posting for the sole purpose of promoting their own website or social media account.

4. Stay on-topic; no memes, funny videos, giveaways, reposts, or low-effort posts

This community is mostly for discussion and news. Remember to search for the thing you're submitting before posting to see if it's already been posted.

We want to keep the quality of posts high. Therefore, memes, funny videos, low-effort posts and reposts are not allowed. We prohibit giveaways because we cannot be sure that the person holding the giveaway will actually do what they promise.

5. Mark Spoilers and NSFW

Make sure to mark your stuff or it may be removed.

No one wants to be spoiled. Therefore, always mark spoilers. Similarly mark NSFW, in case anyone is browsing in a public space or at work.

6. No linking to piracy

Don't share it here, there are other places to find it. Discussion of piracy is fine.

We don't want us moderators or the admins of lemmy.world to get in trouble for linking to piracy. Therefore, any link to piracy will be removed. Discussion of it is of course allowed.

Terraria with RetroAchievements on Android (discuss.tchncs.de)

RetroAchievements for Terraria require tModLoader, which you normally can't run on Android. I tried getting it to work with GameNative, but had no success.

But recently, I discovered this Android app that lets you run desktop .NET apps: https://github.com/FireworkSky/RotatingartLauncher

The installation is pretty straightforward: you just specify the path to the GOG Linux version of Terraria and the path to a ZIP file containing tModLoader.

For mods, I downloaded them on my PC through Steam and simply copied the .tmod files to:

<Internal storage>/RALauncher/Terraria/tModLoader/Mods

For save files, I set up Syncthing to sync ~/.local/share/Terraria/tModLoader/ to: <Internal storage>/RALauncher/Terraria/tModLoader

By default, the game opens stretched at a much lower resolution, but going to Settings -> Video -> Fullscreen automatically sets the correct resolution.

To log in to RetroAchievements, I had to connect a keyboard to enter my username and password. While doing so, I noticed a small bug: connecting a keyboard while the game is running crashes it.

I haven't seen this app mentioned on Lemmy, so I hope someone finds this useful.

You enjoying the Thor? I have my eye on it but I don’t see much reason to get one when I have a N3DS XL

I pre-ordered one when it was first announced, then regretted it when Nintendo started scaring off emulators. Then I eventually got it and and learned about Game Native. Literally playing steam games on it. I have no idea when phone chips started getting this fast, its like one notch below steam deck performance.

Monster hunter stories 3, grounded 2, and I started up elden ring to check out the new patch. Also balatro, slay the spire 2 and silksong, but those 3 you can run on a potato.

If you're playing 3DS games then there's no point as emulation inherently adds input latency. The only benefits are if you're not playing any games that hurt from that and you'd like to have better visuals. I got mine because I'm emulating other platforms too and running Windows games via GameNative was a game changer.

Is the second screen useful for anything outside of DS and 3DS?

It's nice to have some guides pinned and to keep notes. Some games have had second screen mods but a number of them are vibe coded and some of these devs broke open source licenses doing it so I'm steering clear of those.

Wii U is another platform that benefits from it as the bottom screen acts as the Wii U tablet controller though I've not yet tried it out personally.

As a Wii U owner there are very few games that actually utilize the bottom screen for more than just displaying a minimap or your inventory

I use it just as a regular second screen - guides, videos.

If you don't use it for anything, launchers like Cocoon will display the game logo + status bar with info like battery, time, notifications, etc. The launcher sets the brightness to minimum when you don't use it, but the status bar is still visible this way. You can see this in action on my post photo.
