Comparing two different things.

  • liking something barely anyone likes -> no one is invested enough to care.
  • disliking something everyone loves -> everyone is invested

Someone (irl) said that Metallica - St. Anger is a great album the other day and it caused a bit of a ruckus in the group (mostly "oh, that's a new sentence")

[–] usualsuspect191@lemmy.ca 7 points 2 weeks ago

Actual picture of the drum recording session for that album

[–] BladeFederation@piefed.social 1 points 2 weeks ago

Some of St. Anger's songwriting is ok. The drums are absolutely ridiculous & the production is ass in general. But some live versions of St. Anger songs can be decent to good.

No exceptions.

Also, all of her songs except Trouble are boring AF and the goat (and sheep) cover of that one is the superior version.

Objectively correct.

There's a lot of (hopefully joking) hate on the pineapple pizza crowd. If you liked certain Star Wars movies you're likely to have all your Star Wars opinions disregarded by other fans. I think people like to make fun of the out group regardless.

This is the hive mentality that drives social media. It’s the only way it can succeeed. That, and the uquenching need for validation of course.

[–] sompreno@lemmy.zip 1 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Reddit/Lemmy are definitely worse in this regard than something like Instagram

[–] hypnicjerk@piefed.social 1 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

sure instagram just wants to give you body dysmorphia and make you racist

[–] sompreno@lemmy.zip 1 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Well yeah, but from my personal experience Instagram is like a 60-40 split racist and Lemmy/reddit is like a 90-10 split liberal.

The Reddit formula just encourages a hive mentality More so then other platforms due to carma discouraging opposing opinions.

[–] NigelFrobisher@aussie.zone 1 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

90 Marxist-Leninist to 10 liberal, right?

[–] sompreno@lemmy.zip 0 points 2 weeks ago

Marxist leftist is a subset of american liberals but if your talking about Australian liberals this could work.

[–] KuroiKaze@lemmy.world 4 points 2 weeks ago

Take this meme to the thread where the guy says that blowjobs are overrated

[–] UninterestingVoid@reddthat.com 4 points 2 weeks ago

i mean, people will still hate you for liking weird stuff.

[–] GraniteM@lemmy.world 4 points 2 weeks ago

There's also the thread of dumping on a person for liking something because it is popular. "Boo! Basic opinion! You should like the weird niche stuff that I like because I fit into that extremely narrow niche!"

And I applaud the weird shit that isn't for everyone, I think that's where some of the stuff I love the most comes from, but sometimes there's a very good reason that something is already widely beloved.

[–] BladeFederation@piefed.social 4 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Uh... yeah? that's generally how things work alright.

[–] BenLeMan@lemmy.world 6 points 2 weeks ago

They're 14 and this is supposed to be deep.

[–] Rawrosaurus@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago) (1 children)

I don't like when people just say they like or dislike something... I like when they can explain why they like or dislike something. If they can't do that, I assume their like/dislike is just group pressure from the beginning.

[–] BallShapedMan@lemmy.world 1 points 2 weeks ago

Because stabbing my eyes out seems less painful than watching that TV show?

[–] Memnochian@aussie.zone 3 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago) (1 children)

Personally I think Steve Irwin was a dick who invaded animals living spaces and aggravated for television exposure then was predictably killed for doing the same thing. Dude got what he deserved.

[–] Rothe@piefed.social 2 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

Exactly. The sainthood he has received absolutely boggles my mind. And thinking that he was behaving like an asshole to wild animals wasn't even that uncommon back in the day, it is how he is depicted in a South Park episode.

I think most people who adore him have only seen still photos of him, and not actually watched any of the episodes of his show. Or they just have as little clue about wild animals as he had.

There are two of us! I thought it was just ok, definitely not what I'd expect to dominate theatres.

[–] Asfalttikyntaja@sopuli.xyz 2 points 2 weeks ago

Now there’s three of us.

[–] Kolanaki@pawb.social 2 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

I saw a vine a long while back that I would really love to find again that is relevant to the topic.

"You like this? You actually like this? I hate this, you son of a bitch!"

"You hate this? But I love this! You bastard!"

[–] jballs@sh.itjust.works 2 points 2 weeks ago

See the unpopular opinions thread on blowjobs being mid.

[–] LogicalDrivel@sopuli.xyz 2 points 2 weeks ago

Game of Thrones (the book and series) was way over rated. 4.5/10 wouldn't stop half way through again.

[–] pachrist@lemmy.world 1 points 2 weeks ago

Disliking things everyone else loves is easy.

If you want to make people mad, be indifferent towards the things people love. That gets them every time.
