Moderator Guidelines

Moderator Guidelines

  • Don’t be mean to users. Be gentle or neutral.
  • Most moderator actions which have a modlog message should include your username.
  • When in doubt about whether or not a user is problematic, send them a DM.
  • Don’t waste time debating/arguing with problematic users.
  • Assume the best, but don’t tolerate sealioning/just asking questions/concern trolling.
  • Ask another mod to take over cases you struggle with, if you get tired, or when things get personal.
  • Ask the other mods for advice when things get complicated.
  • Share everything you do in the mod matrix, both so several mods aren't unknowingly handling the same issues, but also so you can receive feedback on what you intend to do.
  • Don't rush mod actions. If a case doesn't need to be handled right away, consider taking a short break before getting to it. This is to say, cool down and make room for feedback.
  • Don’t perform too much moderation in the comments, except if you want a verdict to be public or to ask people to dial a convo down/stop. Single comment warnings are okay.
  • Send users concise DMs about verdicts about them, such as bans etc, except in cases where it is clear we don’t want them at all, such as obvious transphobes. No need to notify someone they haven’t been banned of course.
  • Explain to a user why their behavior is problematic and how it is distressing others rather than engage with whatever they are saying. Ask them to avoid this in the future and send them packing if they do not comply.
  • First warn users, then temp ban them, then finally perma ban them when they break the rules or act inappropriately. Skip steps if necessary.
  • Use neutral statements like “this statement can be considered transphobic” rather than “you are being transphobic”.
  • No large decisions or actions without community input (polls or meta posts f.ex.).
  • Large internal decisions (such as ousting a mod) might require a vote, needing more than 50% of the votes to pass. Also consider asking the community for feedback.
  • Remember you are a voluntary moderator. You don’t get paid. Take a break when you need one. Perhaps ask another moderator to step in if necessary.

David Simon, creator of 'The Wire', being interviewed by Ari Shapiro (NPR)

SHAPIRO: Ok, so you've spent your career television without AI, and I could imagine today you thinking, boy, I wish I had that tool to solve those thorny problems...

SIMON: What?

SHAPIRO: ... Or saying...

SIMON: You imagine that?

SHAPIRO: ... Boy, if that had existed, it would have screwed me over.

SIMON: I don't think AI can challenge what writers do at a fundamentally creative level.

SHAPIRO: But if you're trying to transition from scene five to scene six, and you're stuck with that transition, you could imagine plugging that portion of the script into an AI and say, give me 10 ideas for how to transition this.

SIMON: I'd rather put a gun in my mouth.

Side note, I watched The Corner for the first time a few weeks back. All of the episodes are on YouTube.

It's based on the book Simon wrote about Baltimore that would eventually lead to The Wire, but all it the stories are true which makes it a major bummer at times.

The Wire DNA is there, but some of the dialogue and acting isn't quite at that level (but is that even really fair to compare?), but once you get into it and remember it's true stories, it's incredibly engrossing. Proto-Wire. Barely any stuff from the cop side, not much from the dealing side, almost all from the side of the addicts living "the game" day to day.

Some familiar actors too. But the woman who plays Fran was just outstanding. Honestly seems like she wasn't even acting most of the time. I hope she was, because otherwise goddamn.... She absolutely fucking kills it. I don't think I've ever seen her in anything else.

But yeah, brutal shit, be warned.

Here's the first episode. Stick with it, they drop the fake interview thing almost immediately before getting into unfiltered David Simon magic:

Yeah, I've read The Corner though not seen the series in full. Highly recommend the book and also Homicide: A Year on the Killing Streets and you see so much of what ends up becoming The Wire in both.

I highly recommend watching The Corner if you're a fan of The Wire.

It's heartbreaking, but very very good. And yeah the woman who plays Francine deserves awards for that shit, I mean wow.

I never watched Homicide. I get the vibe that it didn't hold up as well as his later stuff.
