I doubt his Newport Beach PD investigation does much other than maybe apply more pressure on the NBA. idk how long this NBA investigation is gonna take though.

It's purely because the police needs to get on par with the media. If the media gets way ahead and some investigative journalist or TMZ reports something semi-credible, it's a real bad look if the police didn't even open a file yet...

Not defending the police here as they’re often slow/terrible in general, and in particular when it comes to stuff like potential sexual crimes. But you can’t really be surprised that thorough investigations would take longer than media reports.
