A "Showerthought" is a simple term used to describe the thoughts that pop into your head while you're doing everyday things like taking a shower, driving, or just daydreaming. The most popular seem to be lighthearted clever little truths, hidden in daily life.

Here are some examples to inspire your own showerthoughts:

Rules

  1. All posts must be showerthoughts
  2. The entire showerthought must be in the title
  3. No politics
    • If your topic is in a grey area, please phrase it to emphasize the fascinating aspects, not the dramatic aspects. You can do this by avoiding overly politicized terms such as "capitalism" and "communism". If you must make comparisons, you can say something is different without saying something is better/worse.
    • A good place for politics is c/politicaldiscussion
  4. Posts must be original/unique
  5. Adhere to Lemmy's Code of Conduct and the TOS

If you made it this far, showerthoughts is accepting new mods. This community is generally tame so its not a lot of work, but having a few more mods would help reports get addressed a little sooner.

Whats it like to be a mod? Reports just show up as messages in your Lemmy inbox, and if a different mod has already addressed the report, the message goes away and you never worry about it.

At no point in my lifetime has there not been war going on in the Middle East. Are we going to run out of boots or faces first I wonder? Or will it really just last forever?

They have made better by democratizing it and making more kinds of music accessible to more people on demand.

It‘s worse because music can be produced and uploaded by, at best, mediocre talent, and artists get paid a pittance. For every hundred songs, 3-5 might be “ok” and one or two are “keepers” if you’re lucky.

Gone are the days where bands have a string of bangers and albums loaded with great songs. A lot of music just seems to be thrown at the wall to see what sticks. There were a lot of downsides to major label controlled music industry, but they also made some great bands.

Would they become citizens? Would we give them rights and votes? Would they have to pay taxes?

My friend has a dog and a board with big paw size buttons that the dog can push. When the dog pushes a button, the board speaks a word. Thus the dog can speak.

For example, last night the dog came to her and pressed the buttons and said " fix bed". It turns out there was a tortilla chip laying in the middle of the dog's bed and he wanted it removed.

So there you go dogs can talk. And maybe other animals can talk. They just need a little device to do it. Like a special kind of cell phone maybe.

This is real. It might be the new big thing.

We have decided some brain quirks are disorders (and get accommodations, as is compassionate), whilst others are flaws (and get slurs). But no one picks their hardware. You cannot earn a better prefrontal cortex or deserve a calmer amygdala. Nor does one get to pick the environment they are born in, which will inform their choices later in life. Even the capacity to "learn better" is a roll of the dice, some brains start the race with sprinting shoes, others with lead weights.

So when we call someone stupid, lazy or insane we are not describing a choice, but simply announcing which kinds of unlucky we’ve decided are worthy of scorn.

I am convinced we're already seeing generative AI used to "verify" military targets for Israel (including now and during their genocide in Palestine) and the US, as well as in ICE with facial recognition for US detainment and target confirmation. If we survive this period in time, any attempt to hold these people accountable for their actions will be met with the excuse they were using generative AI to pick targets and cannot be blamed when the AI makes a mistake. We must not let them use that as an excuse to skirt accountability for the indiscriminate bombings and assaults on civilian targets across the world.

Unfortunately, I cannot see any way out of this so long as we have no government capable, or willing, to reign in the power of these large-data corporations and tech bros. All of this is orchestrated by a group of ultra-wealthy pedophiles pushing technologically-clueless dotards in governments to spearhead the use of generative AI for military and surveillance applications when the technology is misunderstood at best, and ostensibly dangerous at worst. I believe this will only get worse before it gets better if we do not do anything to stop this, and I don't know what we can do to stop any of this at this point.

Big light mode has been stealing our memes for too long. It's time to push back.

Like they do with dogs today.

There would be social pressure in China to stop eating pork so as to do civilisation better.

And nobody would ask why the Bible forbids eating pig meat; since pigs wouldn't be food animals, asking why it's wrong to eat them would be like asking why theft is wrong.

Current language models (misnomered as “AI”) are great at some things but fail at any real thinking.

Self-Driving works decently in predictable environments but anything outside of those limits can make it literally crash and burn.

Public road transportation by individuals just has too many cases where real decision-making is required.

Despite all their resources, I think they’ve given up. All the brilliant engineers and scientists have given up, because they know what we’ve suspected for a long time.

It's clearly a dark pattern thought up by shitbags because users are more likely to create an account after they've typed something out vs. leaving when they find out an account is required to participate.

Even the shitbags over at Mozilla are doing it.

No wonder everyone wants to hold onto being a kid in the US, its the only time you matter to our money loving only overlords and they are marketing everything towards you to make you feel good about it.

Clothing variety is aimed at child and teen sizes and becomes standard designs or highend at adult sizes.
Toys and food items are too.
As you get older less is expected of you financially.

Either you come from a family where you get everything you want and expect more or you have nothing and you are expected to put yourself in debt the moment you have control to catch up to your generation.
You either miss out and they hope you want in or are already addicted by the time you are an adult.
And worst of all they teach you the smart thing to do is to spend money that isn't yours.

The USA is a child loving society.
