Thanks to Wiimmfi, Modded Wii's and any DS can still play online. even using Dolphin or MelonDS.

I just found my 3DS XL a few days ago. Are there custom softwares to install on it?

yep, and it only takes about 15 minutes to mod one. all you do is follow a quick tutorial on the 3ds.hacks.guide site
