So I have set up my own Mastodon instance and it's empty. What should I do to fill up my instance with content? And how do I do that other users of Mastodon on other instances see my "tweets" on my instance?

It's my understanding that the way mastodon works is that initially only toots on your instance can be seen by people on the instance. Of you want other content, a user would need to search for and follow users on other instances, then those other users' toots can show up on people's feeds in your instance. That's why bigger instances have more content for new users out of the box.

I could be wrong as I haven't made my own instance and I haven't seen the source code, but this is how it was explained to me.

And how would for example "mastodon.social" learn about my instance and show my toots to their users? Should someone from "mastodon.social" to search for me explicitly?

You follow someone who is on mastodon.social, they see the follow, look at your profile and follow you back

Or you reply to a thread, someone on mastodon.social sees it, thinks you sound like someone they'd find interesting and follows you.
