Non-native here and not a basketball guy, a kind soul could explain what does "buy in" mean ?

It means willingly adapt to a system/situation.

In very crude musical terms, it's like a musician joining a new band, and having to learn new songs, deal with new bandmates, etc. That would be the musician "buying in" to the new band. It's not a perfect analogy, but close enough.
