I lied. I cheated. I bribed men to cover the crimes of other men. I am an accessory to murder. But the most damning thing of all ... I think I can live with it. And if I had to do it all over again, I would.

I read once that the original plan was for the captain to be French but Patrick Stewart killed it so hard in the audition they were like fuck it, I guess he’ll be British.

But when he goes to his childhood home it is a vineyard in France, but nobody has a French accent, everyone either has a British or American accent.

There's a comment in TNG's first season about French being a dead language. I'm guessing that was meant to hand wave Picard's accent.
