It's nice to see the faculty at least standing for the students.

The justification for the students removal was some simple construction tools. They could have just asked to have those removed instead of routing the students.

So you brought in the army to do your job
Of kicking in doors and swinging their clubs
Back in the morning to watch
Themselves on the news
You're doing the bidding of the money man
If it turns out right they'll call you 'friend'
One little favor how could you really refuse

This is disheartening. I wonder how many of my former students were at these protests.

It's shameful that Canadian universities can't disentangle anti-Semitism from anti-Zionism. It is not racist to peacefully protest against the genocide being committed by the state of Israel.

I am feeling increasingly confused by the world and the direction it's going. I live in a different reality, it seems.

Not "can't", but "won't". They know the difference, but they are incentivozed not to see it.

It is racist to promote Zionism, though

"nonlethal"

Less lethal. The correct term is less lethal. There's no such thing as a nonlethal weapon. Pepper spray and tazers can be lethal under the right circumstances. "Rubber bullets" are rubber coated 25mm rounds that have been deemed sufficiently safe when bounced off of the pavement into a person's legs (and even then can cause serious injuries); they're not remotely safe when fired directly at a person's head, which is what cops often do with them.

Whenever you hear the word "nonlethal" used to describe a weapon, always remember it is only ever "less lethal."

Rubber bullets literally can shoot through your chest at close range. They're easily as lethal as bullets that aren't coated in rubber in many situations

Hmm, more and more we see government disbanding peaceful protests. They really are worried about status quo. What does Israel hold that is so important to Canada or the USA?

[–] psvrh@lemmy.ca 7 points 6 months ago

It's not Israel per se, it's that these protests could metastasize into general anti-establishment ones. Israel is just the flashpoint.

In case you're wondering why the authorities didn't really care about the Convoy is because, frankly, most of the authorities agreed with them. Right-wing protests are inherently pro-establishment, and often have the tacit, if not explicit, support of the police, whereas left-wing protests certainly don't. The tell, with the Convoy, is that no one was going to do anything until the Ambassador Bridge got blockaded: then it became about money. Otherwise, everyone was perfectly content to see rich, white suburbanites having a tantrum. Fascism, after all, can be good for business.
