Hi :) what do you guys and gals think about using Rocket.Chat self-hosted as a private messenger? Is this a bad idea or would it be ok?

It would be ok, but a bit lonely, no?

Better look into Snikket.

I never heard of Snikket so it should be even more lonely. The best advice I can give is to just use Signal. Imo it's good enough.

It's just an easy to setup XMPP server, so you get full federation out of the box.

snikket looks really nice. i tried ejabberd but failed setting it up 🙈🙈🙈 but snikket looks promising.

Prosody is very easy to set up. Snikket is just Prosody with things added on.

i know Signal and use it with a few friends but i am always on the adventure of trying out new ways of communication and that is why i was wandering if Rocket.Chat could be a good privacy messaging option :)

I ran it for awhile but the upgrades even in docker because unnecessarily difficult and annoying. They often rolled out so many incremental and useless updates instead of one large one every once in awhile. I abandoned it for mattermost.

oh ok. yeah i did some testing yesterday and it already pissed me off, that it asks you to register your instance... and so I swicthed to snikket :D

Well... I started a GitPod instance few minutes ago and... it's still not up so that's not a great sign, cf https://github.com/RocketChat/Rocket.Chat/issues/33537 .

Trying Snikket on my server now. Curious to read about suggestions from others.

Seems Snikket container behind proxy isn't a properly documented setup despite https://snikket.org/service/help/advanced/reverse_proxy/ so I didn't manage either.
