The president-elect is renewing unsuccessful calls he made during his first term for the U.S. to buy Greenland from Denmark, adding to the list of allied countries with which he’s picking fights even before taking office on Jan. 20.

Probably just the usual provocations and deranged negotiation tactics, but, I'm just gonna go ahead and say it: The US President-elect is a freakin' moron. Not that we didn't already know that, but America walked right into this lunacy with eyes wide open, fully aware. We deserve everything that's coming.

[–] OutlierBlue@lemmy.ca 22 points 2 days ago

We deserve everything that’s coming.

Speaking as part of the 96% of the world's population who are not American, we don't.

If what scientists are saying about upcoming shortages of fresh water, Canada and Greenland would be brilliant moves...

Not that I expect Trump is the slightest bit aware of this issue:

https://www.worldwildlife.org/threats/water-scarcity

"Climate change is altering patterns of weather and water around the world, causing shortages and droughts in some areas and floods in others.

At the current consumption rate, this situation will only get worse. By 2025, two-thirds of the world’s population may face water shortages. And ecosystems around the world will suffer even more."

Gee if only there was a way for countries with a surplus of one resource and a deficit of another to exchange their own surplus at some rate for what another country has.

Perhaps even treaty agreements about the rates. The nations could maybe agree on shared intermediary token representing value.

TRump could perhaps even name such a new visionary system of exchange after himself: "TRade"?

We could further honour him by naming the negotiated parameters a "TRade agreement"?

I dunno. This is some fucking bleeding edge international relations concepts, I'm certainly not equipped to wrap my head around such forward thinking.

[–] podperson@lemm.ee 10 points 2 days ago

No - I believe our new incoming prime minister will call it "X".

Getting water down from Canada ain't easy.

[–] BlueEther@no.lastname.nz 9 points 2 days ago

But Canada is up and water likes to flow down... Where's the problem?

[–] MrVilliam@lemm.ee 5 points 2 days ago

Trump Aid. TrAid for short. But change the spelling to avoid litigation from Kool-Aid. TrAde. And let's make that A lower case. Trade. Can I have a position in the administration now?

[–] quicklime@lemm.ee 4 points 1 day ago

Someone should sell him a fake, mocked-up Greenland, fly him there for a photo shoot, and disappear with the money. And leave him stranded too.

I'm just going to go on a limb and say: I'm pretty sure this is also a result of Trump having unmonitored conversations with Putin.

This not only fits Putin's "annex everything you want" mentality, but implanting visions of pre-modern conquering or "deal-making" victories is one of the only ways to further inflate Trump's ego. It would be so easy to convince Trump that this is how he'll make history.

And of course, it would be absolutely perfect for Putin's interests if Trump gets distracted with committing major US time and attention in Quixotic land grabs or policy. He not only won't have that attention to spare to keep Putin in check (as if Trump would ever do that), but there are few ways to deeply insult another country more than treating it as a future vassal, further ruining the US's relationships and alliances.

[–] foggy@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago

Put wants Canada and Greenland via the US, so that he controls >50% of Earth's dry land.

[–] Lasherz12@lemmy.world 11 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I'm pretty sure if Greenland went from the Denmark socialist system to America's Late stage capitalist hell hold, that would just start a civil war.

[–] GiddyGap@lemm.ee 15 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Don't know if you're kidding or not, but Denmark is not a socialist country. It's a capitalist country, except one that actually works.

[–] Lasherz12@lemmy.world 12 points 2 days ago (1 children)

To US citizens, any Universal Healthcare is socialist.

[–] GiddyGap@lemm.ee 3 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I'm a US citizen, and I don't see it as socialist.

[–] Lasherz12@lemmy.world 3 points 2 days ago

You must be extra special to use actual definitions and not vibes, good job being an anecdotal outlier.

[–] Nightwingdragon@lemmy.world 11 points 2 days ago

Wait until he takes office. One of his cabinet picks isn't going to make it, and he'll threaten to nuke the Bahamas in retaliation because they're surrounded by too much water and that's not fair to the US. He demands that that water be returned to the Great Salt Lake where it belongs so it can be used to solve all of the water crisis in the country and Make America Wet again.

Then Stormy daniels will chime in and remind us that Trump is incapable of getting anyone wet.

[–] YurkshireLad@lemmy.ca 10 points 2 days ago

So America First is less about nationalism and isolationism, and more about building an empire?

[–] someguy3@lemmy.world 7 points 2 days ago

I'm so tired of this and he's not even in office yet.

[–] Maggoty@lemmy.world 4 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (1 children)

To keep this straight, the US military deployment orders for 2025 are 25th Infantry to Panama, 3rd Armor to Northern Mexico, 11th Airborne to Greenland, 101st Air Assault to Syria, 82nd Airborne to Lebanon, and Special Service to Gaza.

I'm excited to hear where they're sending 10th Mountain.

[–] MagicShel@lemmy.zip 3 points 2 days ago

Probably to Alaska to make everyone call it Mt. McKinley. Because where else is Trump going to think to put 10th Mountain?

[–] droporain@lemmynsfw.com 5 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Excellent state 54! Is anyone beginning to suspect little Donnie wants a one government world order to be run by himself till the end of time... Nah.

[–] NoneOfUrBusiness@fedia.io 2 points 2 days ago (1 children)

to be run by himself till the end of time

So like three years until his cheeto heart gives away?

[–] droporain@lemmynsfw.com 2 points 2 days ago

The Cheeto empire doesn't end with him unfortunately.

[–] eran_morad@lemmy.world 5 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Can we trade musk for Greenland?

[–] Nightwingdragon@lemmy.world 8 points 2 days ago

You could offer me a loaf of stale bread for Musk and I'd still come out ahead in the deal.
