Which player is actually 'best' at guarding Nikola Jokic

For whatever reason before the WCF in 2023, there was a conception that Anthony Davis does very well against Nikola Jokic however that narrative has completely flipped.

I've seen Nurkic, Ayton, Draymond and Gobert mentioned before but the facts (stats) seem untrue.

While there might not be a Jokic stopper, is there an actual player that defends Jokic well to the point of keeping him to or below his averages?

I think 1vs1 it is only Jokic mindset that could stop him, while 1v2 I think Towns and Gobert did a decent job and I totally see that Allen+Mobley could do damage too (but there are no statistical evidence)

Then if you look at numbers last year the only team that make Jokic look bad was Chicago for some reason. 13ppg in with 55%FG and 60%TS in 2 games is the worst he had with any team (still a +11.5 tho). Another notable was Utah, with more relevance too. I think the length of the Jazz really bothered the Joker in RS vs them.

I had to scroll so far for anyone to acknowledge the Bulls. Vucic is not an amazing rim protector for slashing guards but he plays well against “softer” bigs. That and the Bulls elite guard D shuts down most of his passing options.

I’m definitely biased but Embiid held him to a pretty low stat line the last time they played head to head

Grant "Batman" Williams

Jokic reminds me of Tyson Furry, he’s so big and physical that he tiers you with his physicality. So if there’s a player that it’s good at guarding him on the perimeter he bullies that player with his physicality and gets him tired. If a player that is more physical then him guards him well in the inside he’ll make you run around and get the player chase him on the perimeter and gets the player tired like that.

The only way to distract him is send someone to Serbia to shoot his horse

Prime Marc Gasol probably would be the best recent player.

Going back further, Hakeem, Duncan, Garnett, Dikembe. Not many others tbh...

We've actually had success putting OG on Jokic but that's more for guarding the Nuggets as a team than Jokic 1 on 1

I think Bam did a great job in the finals. It just didn’t matter cause Bam wasn’t big enough but he put himself in great positions to stop Jokic. Jokic just scored anyways

Sct Brn played him very well last year from a eye test and statistical perspective

nobody lmao, your only hope is to have someone like steph or dame who you can get him switched into on the other end and outscore them

I want to see what Wemby can do in a year or two. Yes, Jokic can back him down, but Wemby's ridiculous height + length combo could still cause problems as Jokic generally doesn't cram on people (usually only dunking with a running start). And the fact that Wemby doesn't need to jump much while contesting is a big asset, as Jokic kills bigs by getting them in the air. Jokic is fantastic at shielding with his body and using crazy angles and launch points to get shots off in traffic, but Wemby's arms look like they're everywhere.

On the perimeter, could also be interesting. Is Wemby's length and recovery enough to bother Jokic's three & drive threats?

Jokic is my favorite player to watch. His ability to finesse bigger/slower guys or bully smaller ones is amazing (to say nothing of his passing, screen&roll game, etc.). I'd like to see if Wemby can pose a new challenge.

Jokic made AD his bitch last night quite frankly

Al and Rob 2 seasons ago had some success, but that was partially due to the fact that the Nuggets didn’t have many other weapons on the court. Al bodying bigs with Timelord lurking to block shots was a solid combo.

Where are the rui hachimura jokes

[–] hazy_pale_ale@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

He's definitely not the best, but I actually thought Landale did a good job guarding him in the Phoenix v Nuggets finals series.

Basically asking who is Jokic’s Al Horford

Lakers provide no double team to stop Jokic. When he is whirling and twirling down low setting up his drop hook, they gotta collapse on his ass and make him pass. Any shot is worse than the money two footer he shoots all night long.

Wendell Carter Junior is literally the only answer to this question.

[–] yOw_indahOuse@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

You’d need to bring back prime Dream to be able to guard this Jokic when he’s motivated..

[–] Buttholes4Everyone@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

The only thing that can stop Jokic is a pair of race horses.

[–] K1NG_SAVAGE_@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Give me Gobert when Kat is off the floor... last year in the playoffs I saw Rudy apply great defense on Jokic just for Jokic to pass the ball to whoever Kat was guarding (AG)

[–] hornet04@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Dwight Howard did a great job. Jokic will always get his numbers but Dwight made him work for it and made it harder to create for others.
