You basically remove Wemby's biggest strength by putting him on a supporting role on defense, also you play a very outdated fronline of 2 seven footers, like we are in 2003 or something. I hope wemby gets to have a modern coach soon

I think they want to use him like Robert Williams where he's helping off the worst perimeter shooter while someone else bangs with the center.

Yep, they are doing what the Celtics, Grizzlies, Cavs, and Bucks did last year by playing their shotblocking 4 as a weakside defender instead of as a primary rim protector.

Those were the top 4 defenses in the NBA btw.

Exactly and Wembys even skinnier/weaker than those guys. Also probably lessens the injury risk.

thats why I don't get why Kerr stupidly made JJJ the 5 in FIBA instead of putting him as the weakside helper. yet people blamed JJJ for playing the role that doesn't fit his style or utilize his strengths

Plus he's basically a wing in terms of mobility. But since he happens to be over 7 feet OP thinks Pops stuck in 2003

[–] tewmtoo@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I think the spurs should fire pop and hire OP.

Seems like he'd be way cheaper for the Spurs FO payroll. Think of the savings!!!

[–] thy_armageddon@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

OPs never heard of making adjustments.

okay, you are better than a coach who has 27 years of coaching 1 team with 22 winning seasons and 5 championships

I disagree entirely, some of the best rim protectors in the league play helpside defense coming off the corner. Robert Williams, and Giannis as some of the best examples. If you line them up as a more traditional center they are going to be put into more pick and rolls that will sometimes drag them from the hoop. I think playing Wemby at the 4 as a helpside monster is the best way to utilize him.

Imma trust Pop on this one

[–] sewsgup@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Pop has been very open about trialing & erroring what position fits Wemby best on the floor

he said the "3? 4? 5?" line during a press conference like Lebron did at the Miami Heat introduction party

That method worked just fine when Wemby was guarding a non shooter. Problems arose when he helped off of someone that made him pay for leaving them open (i.e. Grant Williams).

I see the 'braindead morons thinking they're smarter than the Spurs coaching staff' posts have started already.

Constant dumb takes like this are what it has been like as a Mavs fan the past 5 seasons with Luka. Sorry spurs fans. But thank you for taking some attention off us.

Congratulations OP you officially have the dumbest comment on all of Reddit today. Pop is one of the greatest coaches of all time. It's 1 freaking game. This entire season is experiment and learn for the entire team.

[–] Charlie_Steve@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

This whole season is about experimenting for the Spurs. Even if you’re right and this is dumb…who cares?

[–] Bababooey98@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

It depends on who he's guarding but I think you have a point. Down the stretch he was on Grant Williams who is a knockdown corner shooter, (42% last season). You can't really help too far off him. Playing him on the corner works great if the guy he's guarding is a weaker shooter but I would have rather seen Victor at the 5 down the stretch guarding Lively so he could just play drop and protect the rim instead of having to worry about Grant Williams out on the perimeter.

Yeah honestly Pop should be fine switching him to center for matchups like this where there's no nonshooter to help off. He played center pretty much all year in Europe and defended quite a few big seven footers effectively. Zach Collins is food defensively outside of rebounds so you're not really losing much there, and Wemby also rebounds a lot better when he's actually near the basket (led his league in rebounds in Europe).

[–] imPuma13@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

He leaks out on the break by design as well

[–] electricHats75@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

It’s been one game

[–] Barellino23@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

0 basketball IQ

Did you watch him try to box out today, he was being man handled no way his body is gonna be able to deal with the physicality of the centre position, if a guy like grant williams was giving him problems then just wait until you've got a Clint Capella type boxing him out every play.

[–] bradperry2435@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Lol. Sure guy

[–] bpx28@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

you are what charles barkley would call "a dumbass"

[–] ForneauCosmique@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

You're clearly someone we should take seriously
