I’ve been a SWE for more than 8 years now. It was so easy getting jobs 2-3 years ago. Now it’s like a never-ending battle if you’re trying to land a job in this market right now. Especially with AI on the rise, many companies and businesses are skeptical to hire software engineer who are not unicorns (many years in FAANG companies).

I’ve worked in corporate, startup environments, and i’ve failed now twice trying to make my own business.

In theory, if I was a unicorn in my craft (SWE) I should be able to create an application that gets alot of traffic and revenue. My point is, maybe it’s not the app/idea/software itself. It’s just who you know and how you can sell.

So SWE’s are pointless now pretty much? Go use wordpress with an experienced business guy and you already closer to being successful than a unicorn SWE.

Thoughts?

Now it’s like a never-ending battle

That's because all of FAANG and other big tech laid off large chunks of their companies in 2023, much of which are still unemployed. We're talking about numbers in excess 250k of the world's top SWEs all fighting for any available positions right now.

Especially with AI on the rise,

Lol... you drank the Kool aid. AI is not taking our jobs.

Go use wordpress with an experienced business guy and you already closer to being successful than a unicorn SWE

Nothing about this statement is true.

It's about solving problems. Don't think it's any more wistful than this.

Well, it’s not the software that generates traffic for websites. It’s the marketing. A software developer without any marketing competence can’t build a business.

But overall, software as an industry is maturing. It’s no longer a growth industry. That’s the thing right now.

I disagree, in my experience getting my first job was easy, actually I feel that landing a job has never been so meritocratic, I applied to a lot of companies and most of them gave me a coding interview, it didn't matter that I'm a cs freshman student, they focused on my GitHub contributions, previous personal projects, certificates on Udemy, soft skills and coding skills. Certainly it's hard to learn everything that is required but it's not as expensive as getting a cs degree and it's a lot more meritocratic.
