By this I mean the overstimulation of the senses that happens while you are there.

My answer is probably Old Delhi. From the sheer population density, the near-constant honking, the utter chaos on the streets, the panoply of religions and ethnicities, the myriad scents and colours that pass you by as you travel down the narrow lanes, and not least the choking air pollution, it is certain to keep you on edge, not necessarily in a bad way.

Are there other cities that come close to, or even surpass, this?

Medellin could be overwhelming at times, particularly if you travel there solo. Wouldn't dream of driving there (crossing the street was enough of a challenge), constantly having to watch your back for thieves, and noisy around certain districts in and near the center of the city.

No South American entries yet so I'll throw in Salvador, Bahia, Brazil

Parts of Tokyo. But ofc ten times better to be overwhelmed there than most elsewhere.

I miss working nights in Roppongi...

The larger Indian cities.
Sensory overload all day, every day

Not so much a city, but CDG drives me absolutely insane. And I'm of French descent. Complicated as shit, overwhelming, and certainly some rude people.

I've been to Paris proper once, and it was a little difficult. Outskirts of Montreal are similar, people speak English but if you're an outsider, some will only speak French to you.

Obviously there are just my experiences. Montreal people have otherwise been incredibly friendly, and I'd love to give Paris another shot.

Having been on this sub for a while now, even without looking at the comments, I reckon that the top answer will be Cairo. Again!!

I personally would have chosen Lagos or Moresby, with Wuhan and Zhengzhou in close competition.

I'll throw in some cities that haven't been mentioned:

Tehran - Similar to Cairo where traffic rules are a "suggestion" and makes Cairo seem orderly by comparison

Rio de Janeiro - Parts of Rio can be overwhelming and unsafe, especially if you don't know what you're doing. Even more so with Salvador

The Tenderloin area of San Francisco - Especially with the wealth inequality and multi-billion dollar tech offices and HQs literally around the corner.

New Delhi and Mexico City were very overwhelming to me. So busy. So big. So chaotic.

Karachi was way more overwhelming than Delhi, Lahore or Islamabad for me.

Tokyo and Hong Kong. Massive crowds, neon everywhere, noisy, huge buildings, and yet everything seems to work well.

I have to agree with you about Old Delhi. I was constantly harassed, followed, and it just wasn’t pleasant to be there.

Beijing was similar but it’s a bit cleaner.

Oh, I totally get what you're saying about Old Delhi. I had a similar experience in Tokyo. The place is a sensory overload, especially in areas like Shibuya with its famous crossing. It's just non-stop action – people everywhere, lights, and sounds. Even the food scene is intense, but in a good way. It's a whole different vibe from Old Delhi, but just as overwhelming!

Marrakech was insane when I was in the madina...

[–] hotinthecitytonight@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Im not going to Delhi or Cairo in my life. l will trust you guys. Got hundreds of other places to go first and if I do those .. maybe, but I hope I never get there. Both sound awful to me.

Seoul, South-Korea

[–] ao_zumi@alien.top 1 points 2 years ago

Totally agree with Delhi! Even if I suppose that cities like Cairo, Lagos or Jakarta are also overwhelming... but I've never been there!

Dubai overwhelms for sure.
