This is what happens when we view driving as a right, instead of a privilege. People hear someone lost their license and say 'that's horrible, how they will get around'

We have this attitude because we refuse to build any alternatives to driving that actually compete on a decent service level. Hourly bus service is not high quality transit nor is it competitive against driving.

How many times do you get to do a thing before it’s decided that rehabilitation isn’t possible?

At least here in BC, every time you get a DUI the temporary suspension, breathalyser requirement, fines/fees (including a yearly fee that has to be paid before your can renew insurance based on total infraction points) and AA meetings all get increased. The first DUI costs $3000 and 3-6 months without a license, the 5th would likely cost over $15000, 18-24 months without a license, with a yearly fee of $4000 for 5 years. You would also have to do a road test if you didn't have a valid license over (I think?) 2 years.

At least six.

Well, five times and then they killed someone, but will they retain their license?

True, this saga is not over yet. Although, in the article, they state the drivers licence is three times revoked right now. He does not have a licence already.

Hopefully he gets prison and a permanent bus pass.
