I'm someone who likes basketball but doesn't like watching basketball. So without too much detail, can someone explain why they do they do that rolling down the court thing?

It's hardly inexplicable. He thought the game clock wouldn't start until he touched the ball, which is the case in the final 2:00 of the game. Only the shot clock waits on touching the ball the whole game. He thought he was doing something good, in his teams' interest. He wasn't.

It's inexplicable that a basketball player would not know this rule.
The only thing that would have made this better is if he literally wrapped a leash around the ball and dragged it up the court.
