Data Hoarder

We are digital librarians. Among us are represented the various reasons to keep data -- legal requirements, competitive requirements, uncertainty of permanence of cloud services, distaste for transmitting your data externally (e.g. government or corporate espionage), cultural and familial archivists, internet collapse preppers, and people who do it themselves so they're sure it's done right. Everyone has their reasons for curating the data they have decided to keep (either forever or For A Damn Long Time (tm) ). Along the way we have sought out like-minded individuals to exchange strategies, war stories, and cautionary tales of failures.

Hi,

This year, I started working with backups. I backup all important data on a weekly basis. If I lose data on my server, laptop, or iPhone, I can restore it within minutes. However, I'm wondering what I should do if I lose my phone or laptop while traveling. I travel frequently, so what should I do in such situations?

Each of my devices has encryption and a strong password (MacBook + Pixel with Lineage OS). I maintain an active terminal session on my Pixel for several servers, payment cards, and access to Binance, ensuring security with a strong password. However, if I lose my devices, I know I should change everything, including passwords, SSH keys, and phone numbers. I also have a duplicate SIM card in case I lose my phone, allowing me to perform important operations.

What else should I do? What is the best strategy? Any advice?

Dont know about lineage os but stock just needs your gmail and it will backup to google drive. Same for iPhone icloud.

  1. Save passwords on bitwarden + aegis 2fa
  2. Print master password and 2fa recovery code. Keep it safe and laminate it, and keep in wallet/passport.
  3. remember to use salt for your master password and only print it without salt.
  4. Get a temp phone and use it to login details and disable your stolen stuff.

Salt examples, (your moms name)randomizedkey(yourdadsname)

I.e. Mary123456789David. ONLY print 123456789 since you wont forget your dad's and mom's name.
