So I have been into watches for some time and as such, my circle of friends are (sometimes painfully) aware of my interest. Some years ago I was given an obvious fake as a gift from a friend.

She gave it to me as a gift from her soon to be father-in-law who lives in Mexico City. While visiting Mexico, she told her FIL that she had a friend back in the states who was into watches and her FIL claimed to “know a guy” so she brought back a fake and gave it to me as a gift.

I accepted the gift and just kinda sat on it, not really sure what to do. I didn’t want to make her feel bad because her heart was in the right place but I also wasn’t going to actually wear it either.

Time marched on and I have moved away from that friend which makes it easier for me. My question to the community is how would you deal with an obvious fake being given to you as a gift?

On a totally unrelated note, anybody have any suggestions on the best way to dispose of a fake Piaget? 😂

Get “FAKE” engraved on the caseback and wear it until it breaks. Or take it apart to learn how watches work and try putting it back together again, without worrying if it works again or not. If I have something to a friend and they did either of those things I’d be happy. If they smashed it with a hammer and didn’t say anything I’d think they’re a bit of an asshole.

I dunno give it your lids a watch and have it go through the wear and tear of being in a kids wrist. other than that put a fake label on it in your collection. cause fakes can still sometimes have sentimental value or story behind them.

If it was me I'd just use it normally on places where I'm not likely to be judged for wearing fake watch, and where I would need a watch but don't want to damage the watches that I love.

NO: social events, date, mall(debatable), golfing, etc

YES: at house, hiking/camping, working at garage, gym, basically when I'm mostly alone, or when I go out with the boys where I expect to get drunk

Or you could just simply give it to someone else and tell them it's clearly a fake who'd still want it.

I also have a fake Panerai where I asked for it myself coming from someone working on a politician where his name is engraved at the back and on the leather bracelet. So I just swapped the bracelet and wore it as one of ky daily beater.

My dad gave me a Tag where I couldn’t find the ref. no so I just assumed it was fake since he travels around Asia a lot. It’s sitting in a drawer for now.

Have the case back engraved "FAKE, yer Grandpa" and toss it in the drawer.
