This doesn't sound great. I feel like this could possibly backfire on them. At the very least I would hope they would reduce the cost of youtube premium then. If you aren't sharing a family plan with friends it's really expensive

Welp, I guess I only have 3 videos left on youtube then, it was a good run. Then it's off to invidious and when that goes, probably peertube will have enough content :)

[–] chrizbie@lemmy.nz 2 points 2 years ago (1 children)

I love the idea of peertube, and it works well but without monetization it's hard to see how any original content worth watching will end up over there

[–] flop@lemmy.fmhy.ml 1 points 2 years ago

I don't really know how much youtube ad-sense really pays out. It seems like for a lot of mid tier content the value is in driving folks to patreon. Even for the big channels the real money is in merch and other monetization methods. The problem is there is just such a smaller audience on peertube it's doesn't give the reach to find an audience worth monetizing.

Shit do I care, lol. Ok, whatever tube ...

a) Linux, Firefox + uBlockOrigin + Enhancer for YouTube;

b) Android, Firefox + uBlock Origin + Video Background Play Fix;

c) I never ever use any account or login into the youtube. Playlists? I got favorites/bookmarks in browser :) Voting, comments? I don't care. Native youtube android apk? Never. So no tracking and stats for you, and no dumb auto recomendations for me. Thanks.

P.S. oh, and all cookies are auto deleted on last tab close. Bye.

So, strike me how? Close whole site or put everything under paywall and die? Hahah.

[–] 4L3moNemo@programming.dev 1 points 2 years ago

P.P.S. it's not that I mind paying for content or seeing some ads, but you (tube) had to make those ads intrusive, interupting or overlaying. Yes? Instead of puting some small unanimated, silent banners on top of playlist or under the player, no – you had to piss on UI/UX experience. After, you had to shit-spice it by hidden tracking of all and everything clicked, with no sane way to say - hey nuts, I clicked that accidently, don't show me that bull content, don't recomend it. No I do not want to clean after my self each time someone sends me funy or dumb tube link. I just don't take oart in that anymore. Track yourself, watch your own ads yourself. FQ.

I look forward to the Revanced patch then.

This pretty much guarantees Chrome will push out Manifest v3 and kill ad-blocking in Chrome, though.

[–] Pixelologist@beehaw.org 1 points 2 years ago

Recently switched back to firefox + duckduckgo. I do not regret it.

[–] jon@lemmy.tf 1 points 2 years ago

Lol. Guess it's time to add the rest of my subbed channels to YT-DL and ditch their shitty ad-filled site entirely.

[–] Helix@feddit.de 1 points 2 years ago* (last edited 2 years ago)

Let's all click on the link that says 'I feel like I'm falsely flagged' to give them some noise to work with.

[–] snaggen@programming.dev 1 points 2 years ago

That is pretty much the same policy I have for forcing adds on me.

[–] Pixel@lemmy.sdf.org 1 points 2 years ago

I canceled my YT premium this year because they raised the price of my grandfathered family plan. I mainly used it for music, but the audio quality really sucks. I switched to a CD quality music service and love it. YT just costs too much for what I get. If they increased the music quality or had a cheaper plan without the music then I'd consider it.

Copy this into uBlock Origin. Tells youtube ads are allowed and have been displayed, but no ads will show. Removes all references to shorts. Resizes video thumbnails so there's 6 wide.

I think this is because YouTube pushed so much its shorts (tiktok knockoff) but they're not as profitable. My guesstimate is that at least 70% of traffic is in shorts now so longer content is rarely played along with longer ads

[–] mobyduck648@beehaw.org 1 points 2 years ago (1 children)

YouTube Shorts are an absolute plague as is the TikTokification of social media generally. I don’t want that attention capitalist version of opium anywhere near me.

[–] Paradox@lemdro.id 1 points 2 years ago

Whats even more frustrating is now you have to choose between:

  • 48 minute long video essay about cheese
  • 10 second video about cheese

I want a 5-10 minute video about cheese, something light I can watch while doing some other stuff, and then move on with my day. I don't want to watch a feature length movie.

[–] reverendsteveii@beehaw.org 0 points 2 years ago

In cases when viewers feel they have been falsely flagged as using an ad blocker, they can share this feedback by clicking on the link in the prompt.

Hands up if you've been through Facebook's ban appeal process and know that this, too, will consist of an automated decision to deny your appeal months after the ban would have ended anyway.

People should develop a federated video hosting service. It will be expensive but I know the community can do it.
