Welcome to the Unpopular Opinion community!

How voting works:

Vote the opposite of the norm.

If you agree that the opinion is unpopular give it an arrow up. If it's something that's widely accepted, give it an arrow down.

Guidelines:

Tag your post, if possible (not required)

  • If your post is a "General" unpopular opinion, start the subject with [GENERAL].
  • If it is a Lemmy-specific unpopular opinion, start it with [LEMMY].

Rules:

1. NO POLITICS

Politics is everywhere. Let's make this about [general] and [lemmy] - specific topics, and keep politics out of it.

2. Be civil.

Disagreements happen, but that doesn’t provide the right to personally attack others. No racism/sexism/bigotry. Please also refrain from gatekeeping others' opinions.

3. No bots, spam or self-promotion.

Only approved bots, which follow the guidelines for bots set by the instance, are allowed.

4. Shitposts and memes are allowed but...

Only until they prove to be a problem. They can and will be removed at moderator discretion.

5. No trolling.

This shouldn't need an explanation. If your post or comment is made just to get a rise with no real value, it will be removed. You do this too often, you will get a vacation to touch grass, away from this community for 1 or more days. Repeat offenses will result in a perma-ban.

6. Defend your opinion

This is a bit of a mix of rules 4 and 5 to help foster higher quality posts. You are expected to defend your unpopular opinion in the post body. We don't expect a whole manifesto (please, no manifestos), but you should at least provide some details as to why you hold the position you do.

Instance-wide rules always apply. https://legal.lemmy.world/tos/

NOTE: I am NOT defending AI or it's usage or anything like that. So just tie that horse right back up at the kitchen sink. I don't like the whole AI thing. This post is not about AI.

I get that it was necessary at first, but now whenever there's any hint of AI, there's a great chorus of everyone saying the same thing 'AI slop bla bla bla' like a gaggle of sheep jerking their knees.

It's not fucking helpful. It only sows even more division among the peasants, while the oligarchs take zero notice and continue on as usual. The correct way to engage with AI content you don't like is just not at all.

Examples:

Recently I watched as a post for a community event was removed, because it had an AI image. The image was not requested or created by the organiser, it was provided to them, and had information in several languages. But the post was removed because AI slop and now there is less human connection happening. Yay. Well fucking done. You literally are helping the AI overlords now.

I've seen many actual legit digital artists getting hit with the cries of AI slop and even banned, when they have been making art for years before AI was even a thing. People actually can't tell the difference half the time when they think they can, and end up hurting real artists.

Now is not the time to be attacking each other over using AI to generate some stupid meme. There are much, MUCH bigger issues at stake right now, and calling everything AI slop does nothing to help.

Yup, an unpopular opinion.

I'd argue there's absolutely no moral usage of it because it's a tool of the oligarchs to devaule workers further and further. AI media slop is a real problem, if you allow any of it then where is the line at which you stop then?

[–] Auth@lemmy.world 1 points 40 minutes ago (1 children)

how is it a tool of the oligarchs to devalue workers? It can be used by any worker for a tiny cost and the models themselves are a pretty competitive space with very little signs of any of the big companies having a moat.

AI media slop would be a problem if the content on these platforms wasnt already the worst shit possible.

[–] BeardededSquidward@lemmy.blahaj.zone 1 points 36 minutes ago (1 children)

The fact they see it as a replacement for certain workers for cost cutting it the entire reason. You don't think they'll validate that if AI can do X of your job you deserve less money? Nothing about AI is to help YOU, the worker, it's to help THEM the business.

[–] Auth@lemmy.world 1 points 26 minutes ago

Ok so tool of the oligarch to devalue workers is meaningless since every piece of tech falls under that description.

I dislike it too, but I strongly disagree, ai slop is much worse and you have to be loud because of how strongly it is forced upon us.

[–] luthis@lemmy.nz 1 points 1 hour ago

Be loud about why it's bad

This particular opinion is popular with me, only because one of the things that got SO tiring on reddit was scrolling past all the FAAAAAKE FFFFEEEEAAAAAAAKKKKKEEEE FAKE AKF EKA FKEF FEEEAAAAKKKEEE comments on any submission that happened before AI, or SCRIPTEDDDDDDDD on any video that might be a sketch or might even be legit. Those people now stroke their genitals while posting AAAAAAIIIIIII SSSSLLLLOOOPPPPPPPPPP.

So either it is these things or it isn't, but   S H U T   T H E   F U C K   U P . Jesus fucking christ.

That said, AI slop sucks.

Feels like MLK's quote fits right here

I have almost reached the regrettable conclusion that the Negro’s great stumbling block in his stride toward freedom is not the White Citizen’s Counciler or the Ku Klux Klanner, but the white moderate, who is more devoted to “order” than to justice; who prefers a negative peace which is the absence of tension to a positive peace which is the presence of justice

[–] luthis@lemmy.nz -2 points 4 hours ago

We do need tension, but not between us peasants, it needs to be between us and legislators/oligarchs.

[–] GarboDog@lemmy.world 7 points 5 hours ago (1 children)

Ok, but you’re saying AI is a problem, but we shouldn’t call it out along with other issues? Nah, we’ll call out whats slop: slop.

Overall you’re saying it’s not actually about AI but it’s literally feeling pro ai, and none of us are conformists, especially when it comes from horrendous shit/actions to individual instigators.

[–] luthis@lemmy.nz -1 points 4 hours ago

Well you could instead say something like, “You shouldn’t use AI for images, it massively harms the environment and has a huge societal cost that we will all pay.” Engage with the person, not the content. That’s far more effective.

[–] silentjohn@lemmy.ml 5 points 4 hours ago (1 children)

Truly an unpopular opinion.

Fuck AI and everybody using it

[–] luthis@lemmy.nz 0 points 4 hours ago

If we cannot stop the infighting, the machines have already won.

[–] andicraft@lemmy.blahaj.zone 7 points 6 hours ago (1 children)

nah, fuck ai and anyone who uses it

Anyone can post Ai slop by accident. It's how you handle it. And if you do it on purpose, you know what side you're on. I'm fine with people acknowledging that they used something they didn't intent to.

[–] MoonRaven@feddit.nl 1 points 4 hours ago

In regards to that event. Did they just say "hey I didn't know, here's an image that's just word art?". There are so many ways to handle things. Hell, just hand draw something in a minute when you find out and post that instead.

AI slop is not your friend.

[–] victorz@lemmy.world 12 points 11 hours ago (1 children)

Upvoted for very unpopular opinion.

Yes, let's just ignore all the bad things happening around us. Great idea.

[–] luthis@lemmy.nz 0 points 4 hours ago

Not ignore, find better ways to deal with it.

dont blame the anti-slop crowd for the problems created by the stupid jerks destroying our only livable planet for profit

it's OUR fault that the dogshit that is getting plastered everywhere is causing a backlash?

unpopular for sure, despite its thoughtlessness, have an upvote

[–] luthis@lemmy.nz -2 points 4 hours ago (1 children)

You've missed the point of the post.

Not calling it out is akin to not calling out anything else unethical.

See a parent hitting their child? Shut up and move along.

AI data center being built in your neighbourhood? SHUT UP, JUST DONT USE IT.

Someone littering on your street? Stop whinging, just ignore it and it will eventually blow in to the ocean - all good!

If no one speaks up, then it just gets worse. Protest is fundamental to pushing back against the horse shit that corpos try and push down our throats every day. Someone less informed may take the lack of negative comments towards AI slop as it being OK and normal when it clearly isnt, therefore adding to the problem.

Hard disagree with your opinion and I think it comes across as corpo cuckery so you get an upvote I guess.
