Ask Lemmy
A Fediverse community for open-ended, thought provoking questions
Rules: (interactive)
1) Be nice and; have fun
Doxxing, trolling, sealioning, racism, toxicity and dog-whistling are not welcomed in AskLemmy. Remember what your mother said: if you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all. In addition, the site-wide Lemmy.world terms of service also apply here. Please familiarize yourself with them
2) All posts must end with a '?'
This is sort of like Jeopardy. Please phrase all post titles in the form of a proper question ending with ?
3) No spam
Please do not flood the community with nonsense. Actual suspected spammers will be banned on site. No astroturfing.
4) NSFW is okay, within reason
Just remember to tag posts with either a content warning or a [NSFW] tag. Overtly sexual posts are not allowed, please direct them to either !asklemmyafterdark@lemmy.world or !asklemmynsfw@lemmynsfw.com.
NSFW comments should be restricted to posts tagged [NSFW].
5) This is not a support community.
It is not a place for 'how do I?', type questions.
If you have any questions regarding the site itself or would like to report a community, please direct them to Lemmy.world Support or email info@lemmy.world. For other questions check our partnered communities list, or use the search function.
6) No US Politics.
Please don't post about current US Politics. If you need to do this, try !politicaldiscussion@lemmy.world or !uspolitics@lemmy.world
7) No Hit-and-Run questions.
Please don't delete your post for no apparent reason. If you plan on deleting a question later, say so in the post, or if you feel that you have a good reason to remove it, message a mod beforehand. It's not fair to the ones who took their time to answer, and it's not in the spirit of the community.
8) No Bots.
Posts or comments from bots, LLM's, AIs, Neural Networks, Transformers, or Marvin the Paranoid Android are not welcome in AskLemmy. Real humans only please.
Reminder: The terms of service apply here too.

I just drive-by shitpost in "all" like the good lord intended
I've found that there hasn't been much point in subscribing. Communities are so small that most have one post every couple of weeks or even months (outside of a few core popular communities). It has always been more worthwhile going to c/all and filter through what you see.
Very convenient, thanks!
Wow, there are so many interesting and diverse communities constantly created!
I follow random recommendations in other peoples comments. So welcome to !trippinthroughtime@lemmy.ca and !mrlovenstein@sh.itjust.works !
- View by “all”, subscribe to communities you’re interested in and block the ones you don’t want to see. Fediverse is still small enough that it’s relatively easy to sort through.
- Use the search bar to look for specific keywords for topics that interest you. Depending on your interface, you probably have some version of an “explore communities” page where you can see what’s popular.
- Sometimes I’ll find communities by seeing what other users with similar interests interact with on their profiles.

Darn this one is so obvious yet I didnt't think of it. Thanks!
Every Lemmy instance has a built-in search tool that can be used to search across instances (make sure the slider at the top is set to "All", it usually defaults to "Local"). Browsing All for a while will show you a decent cross-section of the most active communities (just make sure to tighten your filters). And there are some 3rd party search tools like https://lemmyverse.net/ that do periodic trawls of posts and traffic.
it does not search across instances, it only searches its local database copies of instance data it has already receieved.
ie, if theres some server that no lemmy.world user has subscribed to, then no lemmy.world user could search that servers content without an exact link.
Right, though on a largeish instance with a limited blocklist you won't see much difference (new communities mostly)
Yeah, I already use "All" but that's still very limiting
exactly. it (your server) is limited to what the users of that server have subscribed to. but many places are using federating bots to fill this gap.. no idea if your home base (lemmy.ml) is or not
I have subs but I never bother with them and browse 'All'. If there's anything I don't want to keep seeing I just filter out that community.
my instance auto-subscribes to all external communities via a federating bot. this allows my servers '/all/new' queue to be filled with shit my personal account is not subscribed to, and thats how i see new communities to subscribe to.
but thats my local mbin instance.. not sure what lemmings do
Thanks! I'm planning to host my own instance so this is very useful.
Offtopic: what's your experience with mbin? Do you follow personal accounts (like from Mastodon as opposed to Lemmy-like communities)? And why did you choose mbin over other alternatives?
