My local board game shop sells Nemesis lockdown and I'm trying to decide if I should buy it or not. The game looks awesome, however, it's a little pricey.

Heard some people state that lockdown was a little harder to learn, and then they'd recommend newer players learn the original prior to getting the lockdown version.

I did have a few other questions about it though. Do the expansions work with lockdown? Is there any additional player expansions that you can add on to it? We have a gaming group regularly with 5 to 7 people, it'd be really nice if we could fit those additional two people on.

FAQ

I live in Guatemala/Canada/Niue/USA, why are you posting on a Saturday?!

Because I'm writing this from Europe in the future where it's already Sunday. Timezones be crazy.

Why are there a bunch of non-board games in the board game list?

Because the Tabletop games category on Kickstarter includes anything remotely related to board games and sometimes things slip through my filters.

Why is this future award winning board game and literal saviour of humanity missing from your list?

Sometimes my filters get a bit overzealous and discard actually valid projects. If you feel something is missing for this reason, leave a comment and I'll add it (maybe).

Can I donate all my money to you?

No

Can you help me promote my game?

Please no. I make lists. Nothing more.

Your list is full of errors and now my energy bill is too high!

Indeed, this fine piece of code runs purely on this growing new thing called LSD, so anything can happen. Leave a comment and I'll see what I can do.

Hi folks! Currently on vacation with my family and we're getting tired of the party games I own. Looking for a couple of suggestions! Some caveats:

  • No word based games, we already have and love Just One, Codenames, etc
  • No social deduction games, they hate them
  • Preferably language independent or with few text dependence. We have Portuguese and german people in the group and not everyone understands English!
  • Low weight/rules
  • Supports 7 players!

Thanks a lot friends!

Hey everyone.

I got the steam game on a sale some time ago. Now my wife is playing it a lot more than me through family share. Her birthday is coming up and I'm thinking about getting the game for her as it also won Spiel des Jahres this year.

Have any of you played the game? I'd be happy to hear any experiences you want to share.

Broke out Gate and the Gates expansion for this morning’s solo game session. Got close to winning this time around, but the deck was under built by the time I got to the final two enemies. Final score of 30!

I'm tinkering with a framework to implement board games in c# (similar to boardgame.io in JS) part of that is getting a handle on turn structures. (What is a round? what is a turn? who gets to go when? etc)

So I've gone through all my games and looked for recurring patterns and exceptions to them and here's what I've collected so far:

  • There's always at least one structure that handles how player act or "take turns"
    • the vast majority of games do traditional turns - one player does things, then then another,
      • usually in a fixed order maybe going forward some times and backward other times.
      • sometimes the order can change
      • also possible are:
        • turn order decks (you don't know who goes next but know that everyone gets a turn)
        • action tracks (where whoever is furthest back gets to go next, possibly resulting in an uneven number of turns)
        • the next player is dependent on an action of the previous player
    • it's also possible that players can play simultaneously
      • a complete free for all is pretty common
      • it's also possible that players can act freely to some point, then have to wait for everyone else to catch up
    • another consideration, both for concurrent and sequential play is that sometimes some players are excluded (Codenames for example lets all guessers on a given team act concurrently but not the leaders or the other team)
    • there can be different rules at different times (like first picking a tile in sequence then everyone can place it simultaneously)
    • and there can be nested rules (like every player gets to run an auction but in every auction each player get's to bid as well)
    • one relatively common special case is where certain actions on a player's turn result in decisions being needed from other players (trades, attacks, "each player ..." effects)
  • there are often structures that simply subdivide another structure
    • they can occur at any level. A game may be divided into "setup" and "play", a round could be divided into different phases but a single player's turn might also be divided into smaller steps.
    • these subdivision usually restrict / specify which actions are allowed in them
    • these subdivision often come with limits like: you can only do N actions
    • sometimes a player can "pass" sometimes they cannot

I'm wondering if anyone can think of an instance that is not covered by these "rules".

There are some tiny tin-box style games, often not very deep but maybe there is something out there worth traveling around with?

Just thought I'd share this. It's an excellent site for reviews of apps and online versions of board games. The guy who runs it has got a pretty exhaustive list of reviews (though not complete!)

There's also a Discord community which is friendly and actually very fediverse like in its lack of toxicity

Anyway, it was perfect for someone like me, because my wife is a bad loser and no longer plays games with me, and my son is 7 so we can manage Patchwork but not much more just yet 😛

I'm interested in hearing what cooperative games people are playing, old or new. My group has had Bloc by Bloc out on the table a few times. That is pretty fun for us, but I'm wanting to add some more cooperative titles to the library.

Not had a chance to actually watch this yet but should be interesting I think...

I just saw some how to play videos hitting my Youtube feed. While I concede the point that it is different than the base game of Sagrada I don't feel as though it brings enough to the table to warrant buying it. I really enjoy Sagrada, but I'll be passing this one up for sure. Maybe if it hits a deep discount I'd give it a try.

What is your opinion on these games?

Race for the Galaxy seems to be the original game, that deserves it‘s praise. But do you still think it‘s good by today‘s standards?

How does it compare to Roll for the Galaxy? Is the latter a more approachable version but lacks depth, like more beginner friendly dice versions of other games?

But that seems to be the case for Jump Drive, right? So far, this one looks like a family friendly approach, while still being awesome enough for more experienced players.

But then there‘s New Frontiers from Lehmann, another space themed game! This one looks a bit like an easy 3.5X game, right? Looking back, do you think all of them are worth buying? If you had to choose only one, which one would it be?

dpunked seems to be sleeping in... So, what did you folks play last week?

So Oath is not a legacy game, because there's no permanent changes to the game (no destruction, no stickers, no writing, nothing). It's not a campaign game either since there's no overarching narrative covering multiple games (well, not one provided by the game, at least). So it's kind of its own thing.

I really like the idea of what Oath is going for: a living game that changes and evolves with each play, but not in a permanent fashion, and not with an end. In that sense it's markedly different from a legacy game (which has both permanent changes and also a set end to those changes). But when trying to find other games like it I find that I don't have a word to describe it. It seems like right after Risk: Legacy came out everybody agreed on the legacy tag for that kind of game, and then when Pandemic Legacy came out it was irreversible. Now everybody knows what a legacy game is. Oath seems to be doing something just as new as the legacy thing was back then, but no term seems to have come out. Like, there's no category of "chronicle games".

Where is the table?

There is currently a bug in Kbin that breaks table formatting in posts. When this is fixed, I will start inlining tables again.

As in title. Do you know any places where you can play on-site (not just borrow and play at home)? If so, do you have any opinions on them?

Opted for a couple games of Onirim this morning, and I got close to finally winning! Or at least I thought I had until I checked the discard and saw that that blue moon card I needed was discarded only a few turns into the game. Oh well, one day…

Have you played any single player board games that you would recommend?

I’m looking to get a few games to play when everyone is out of the house and I don’t want to turn on the game box.

I’ve played Bargain Basement Bathysphere and March of the Ants. Looking for more!

Got in our first game of Waypoints. Fun little roll and write. A lot to wrap your head around. Some of the scoring conditions are a little tricky. Had a good time though. May take it on an upcoming trip.

  • The Expert: You buy board games as often and as many as you can. You play them alone or with friends. It‘s your favorite hobby.

  • The Collector: You buy way too many games, but actually play only a handful of them.

  • The Hermit: Your prefered way of playing is playing alone.

  • The Specialist: You own a specific but small collection of games, carefully curated for every opportunity, heavy games included.

  • The Casual: You play from time to time with friends, enjoy it, but you are just getting started.

I want to get to know you better! Have I missed a kind of gamer here?
