I don't think they are based on any descriptions in the book. They are likely just artistic conceptions that fit the states in 1984.

The original Spanish flag used like this:

Spanish cross of Burgundy flag

In the next, more successful revolution in Ecuador, starting in Guayaquil, two other flags were used before joining Gran Colombia and getting a yellow-blue-red triband similar two what is in use today:

Blue-white striped flag with three stars

White flag with blue canton with a white star

Version of these flag would also appear 1845-1860:

white-blue-white vertical triband with three stars

white-blue-white vertical triband with seven stars

The current flag looks like this, which obviously needs changing: SoB Minnesota flag

There is a commission tasked with proposing a new design. A news article about it is available here: https://www.cbsnews.com/minnesota/news/minnesota-house-bill-moves-forward-commission-to-redesign-state-flag-and-seal/

The top proposal, called "The North Star Flag", seems to be a popular favorite.

I gathered these proposals from these two sites: https://newmnflag.org/designs https://vexillology.fandom.com/wiki/Minnesota

I love the colors and design of this flag despite being a shield-on-a-bedsheet. Massachusetts' official colors are blue, green, and cranberry.

This is not my design, this was created by /u/interrobang26 from this post: https://old.reddit.com/r/vexillology/comments/jvwq1y/massachusetts_cranberry_and_pine/

I probably vote on the top alternative

It was probably for the better that they did not go for this flag. It is hard to think anything else than "Russia with a crocodile". And at least I relate that to the dangerous semi-synthetic opioid desomorphine, common in Russia, and referred to as "krokodil".

Here's another proposal used different colors, which I think would have worked better:

Blue-black-yellow triband with black crocodile

Coat of arms in question:

Of course, the current flag is great, but a feeling lingers that it was a missed chance to get pineapples on a national flag.

I think the middle pineapple should also be golden, though. Not really sure what happened there.

This was an initial proposal, with the same colors in a slightly boring horizontal triband:

green-yellow-black-triband

Another proposal rearranged it a bit, but was discarded as too similar to the flag of Tanganyika, which seems quite reasonable, since they did not know that problem would be short-lived:

flag with green-yellow-black-yellow-black horizontal stripes

In the end they went for the saltire, which seems like a great choice, creating a more unique and interesting design.

The previous flag was alongside Jamaica, the only national flag in the world without either blue, red or white.

The change happened after a coup, headed by the legendary Marxist and pan-Africanist Thomas Sankara. These ideologies are also reflected in the flag, with a Marxist-inspired design and the pan-African color palette. This makes the flag not a nice example of a simple yet beautiful design, but also a good example of how vexillology can be used to express an ideological stance.

The flag of Upper Volta had a quite different feeling, rather leading the thoughts to, well, the German Empire, which incidentally had an identical flag:

The most unique feature is probably the emblem, of which Wikipedia says:

The emblem in the black is a boar's tusk—the symbol of customs and tradition but also prosperity. Its worn as a pendant on the islands—along with two leaves of the local namele tree. These leaves are supposed to be a token of peace, and their 39 leaflets represent the original 39 members of the Parliament of Vanuatu.

Before independence, Vanuatu was a French-British condominium under the name New Hebrides, and under this god-awful flag, which fortunately seems to be limited to sporting events:

Of course Tolkien devised an entire heraldic tradition for his books. Wikipeadia page about it

I found the flags here. I do not know where they originally came from: https://www.etsy.com/se-en/listing/1491383712/lotr-middle-earth-collectible-flag

Flag in the wild:

Waving flag of Y Wladfa

The flag takes the blue-white stripes from the Argentinian flag, and the red dragon is a Welsh symbol, although they both take non-standard forms. I'm not able to confirm it, but this may be due to the flag predating the standardization of the Welsh flag. A version using standard elements also seems to exist:

From Wikipedia about the county flags:

Liberia is subdivided into 15 counties, each of which is entitled to its own flag. Each county flag bears the national flag of Liberia in the canton. The county flags are flown at regional offices and together encircling the national flag of Liberia at the Executive Mansion.

The flags were introduced in 1965 by William Tubman for the purpose of promoting the counties as meaningful entities. Their design was inspired by Liberia's quilting tradition.

The flags have been the subject of widespread ridicule by members of online vexillology communities on social media platforms such as Reddit and Facebook. However, vexillologist Steven A. Knowlton argues that these discussions demonstrate a lack of understanding of the political and cultural context of the flags and of the material construction of flags from textiles as opposed to digital creation.

The flag has gone through some nice gradual evolution throughout history:

1903—1926:

1926—1953:

1953—1965:

Originally, the saffron color represented Hindus, the green Muslims, and white other religious communities. However, this is no longer the case, since the symbolism has been redefined to avoid sectarianism. They now symbolize courage and sacrifice, peace and truth, and faith and chivalry respectively.

Unusual with the Indian flag is that not only the graphical design carries symbolism, but also the fabric. An Indian flag should only be made out of Khadi, a special hand-spun cloth popularized by Mahatma Gandhi.

Hi,
Previously I have been running the bot on an instance that I host. Due to the age of my server I haven't been able to upgrade past 0.17.4 and the disk IO from the database is beginning to halt the entire server, so I'm going to move the bot onto lemmy.world so my crumbling server doesn't break the bot.
If the bot breaks now it's probably because of lemmy.world updating.

Happy !waveing

The colors started to be used to symbolize Belgium during the end of the 18th century, in defiance to the Austrian rule. The colors are taken from those used by the constituent regions of Belgium, corresponding to the red lion of Hainaut, Limburg and Luxembourg, the yellow lion of Brabant, and the black lion of Flanders and Namur. The order of the colors on the flag was not obvious though, and initially some other versions were used, e.g. the flag of the Brabant Revolution (1789-1790):

flag Brabant Revolution 1789-1790

and in the Belgian revolution 1830:

flag Belgian revolution 1830

The official version has the unusual ratio 13:15, although flags with 2:3 ratio are also common. On the royal palace, a flag with the even more unusual ratio 4:3 is flown, in order to look more proportional from below:

Flag at royal place Brussels

Noteworthy is also the naval ensign of Belgium, which looks drastically different than the national flag: Naval Ensign Belgium
