Went to London Retro games and Card Fair last week. Just about every stall I looked at had some sweaty smelly fucker who just didnt care about hygiene.

[–] idiomaddict@lemmy.world 44 points 5 days ago (2 children)

The sweaty part isn’t their fault, especially last week in London, but the rest is.

Sweat does not necessarily smell.
It smells when bacteria procreate and poop in it. Which happens when you don't wash away sweat for too long.

Also you can use antiperspirants.

[–] idiomaddict@lemmy.world 17 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Right, that’s why the rest of it is their fault, but not the sweat.

Also you can use antiperspirants.

Unless I cover my whole body in it, somewhere is going to be sweaty. And I don’t think it’s a great idea to hinder my ability to cool myself.

Are you also really limber? Can you touch your toes and you don't even stretch every day? Or are you a goddess at yoga?

Do you have a problem knowing when you are hungry or thirsty? Like, sometimes do you put a glass of water to your lips and suddenly you gulp it at once and are surprised? Do you have to gauge hunger by recognizing that you are tired or angry instead of simply hunger urges?

[–] idiomaddict@lemmy.world 6 points 4 days ago (2 children)

I have both ehlers danlos and adhd, so absolutely, yes.

[–] Nouvellalia@lemmy.world 4 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Same, girl. I figured you did and wanted to make sure you knew about it. Also, since you've hit the bullseye, I'm going to assume you need to make sure and sort out any gender stuff in a way that feels good to you. Did you get to that already too? XD

[–] idiomaddict@lemmy.world 4 points 4 days ago (1 children)

lol, every tenth comment includes “probably an egg,” you mind reader

[–] Nouvellalia@lemmy.world 2 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Lol, glad you're on top of all that. I'm not trying to be intrusive, it just would have been really helpful if decades ago when I knew I had stupid 2 setting sweat glands, I also knew about everything else that usually comes with it.

I have found that meditation, breathing, and yoga give me more conscious control over parts of my unconscious nervous system than most people are usually allowed. It helps with the erratic responses. It's like whoever was supposed to be in control of things ain't there, but I can be there if I remember and work it myself. That helps with the crummy digestive system, temperature responses, lack of feedback, and runaway emotional states.

It can be exhausting, like working a complex control panel you have to pay complete attention to, but it's a great tool to have.🧡

No, not at all, I appreciate the insight and would love to have been given a hint about the gender thing younger. I didn’t realize those were related to sweating at all, and frankly I thought the flexibility was ED, the eating habits were ADHD, and the gender was autism, so I’m surprised you got all that. I know they've got high comorbidities, but I’m very interested in what links those specific symptoms.

[–] Nouvellalia@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

It was just the comorbidities that tipped me off. Well, that and the added clue that you are here specifically. ED+ADHD+autism+lemmy is an almost guaranteed hit for also having gender fuckery.

ED alters collagen, a key brain component. This can cause the system responsible for gender congruency to get incorrect, or no feedback at a key stage in development. It can cause other systems to get incorect feedback too, leading to autism.

Gender dysphoria can cause childhood cptsd, which presents as autism or ADHD as the brain grows wonky.

Having a differently connected, autistic network can cause the system responsible for gender congruency to get the wrong, or no signals at all during that key stage in development.

So, I don't think it's one thing really. It's just a bunch of stuff that triggers eachother.

Shot in the dark: POTS, too?

(sidenote: I just started beta blockers for my POTS and they've both helped immensely and given me the fragrant armpits of a teenaged boy. I've swapped to more aggressive armpit soap and that seems to have helped.)

[–] idiomaddict@lemmy.world 1 points 4 days ago

That one luckily not so far. I do get lightheaded upon standing sort of often, just not enough to lose consciousness or anything like that.

[–] CultLeader4Hire@lemmy.world 3 points 4 days ago

lol I was reading their comment and thinking yeah this person doesn’t know ADHD makes those body signals basically impossible to notice

[–] EndlessNightmare@reddthat.com 2 points 4 days ago

Which happens when you don’t wash away sweat for too long.

The question is "how long it too long?" If it's just a few hours, then it could indeed be within the course of an event.

Also you can use antiperspirants.

Aren't these generally only for arm pits, granted this is a particularly important area.

Speaking as a.. sweaty Bernard I guess, I beg to differ on the crossed out part.

Both because sweating is an EXTERNAL cooling system (cooling from the skin in as the body heats up from the inside out) and because, at least in my case, the excessive sweating doesn't seem to make me tolerate heat better than most people. It's rather the opposite..

[–] idiomaddict@lemmy.world 8 points 4 days ago (2 children)

Oh, yeah, I don’t tolerate the heat at all compared to other people, but I always tell myself the sweating is a consequence of that, and I’m actually cooling myself very well. Otherwise, I’ll go insane.

But I mean internal to myself, as in not a separate device.

You can certainly be a sweaty Bernard (or Freddy), but I am also in better times a chilly Willy and I reject the nickname chilly lily. Sometimes I’m also a cryin O’Brien, which sounds more neutral, but I am picturing this.

(Side note:) I think the heat is getting to my brain, I would normally be very embarrassed to share the “baby talk” I use with my husband with people. Maybe my ability to cringe is related to the temperature.

[–] captainlezbian@lemmy.world 2 points 4 days ago

Oh I get that, so much of my social capacity shuts down whenever I'm overheating. No shame, forgetting that I can ask people for things, in general I'm just trying to go semi conscious in the dark as I sweat myself to dehydration

[–] Lumisal@lemmy.world 2 points 4 days ago (2 children)

I'm not vegan at all, but as someone who easily overheats, I eat very little or no meat at all in the summer because it greatly cools me down. Or maybe better said, meat heats me up. So I save it for winter

[–] idiomaddict@lemmy.world 2 points 4 days ago (2 children)

I am vegan, so maybe that’s part of why I’m often chilly in the winter, but eating generally warms me up. That’s fine in the winter, but in the summer it makes eating anything substantial difficult.

[–] Lumisal@lemmy.world 1 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Maybe you can try some plant fats and high protein? Like a very decadent high protein cake? Though high bioavailable protein is a bit harder as a vegan than vegetarian, but I think it might still be possible to make a very decadent cake perhaps?

[–] idiomaddict@lemmy.world 3 points 4 days ago

I normally eat a bunch of tofu and legumes, so I get a lot of protein generally. Currently I’m doing a lot of (high protein and sugar free) skyr alternative that I mix with oats, almonds, chia seeds, frozen berries, and puffed amaranth, which is pretty nutritious, I just have to eat it very early or very late

[–] ayyy@sh.itjust.works -1 points 4 days ago (1 children)

This only happens after periods of starvation.

[–] idiomaddict@lemmy.world 2 points 4 days ago (1 children)

It happens for me no matter what. I’m talking about perceived warmth, because my actual temperature is only relevant if it’s outside of the healthy range, so I only measure it when I’m sick.

[–] ayyy@sh.itjust.works 1 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Are you eating 3 small meals a day?

[–] idiomaddict@lemmy.world 2 points 4 days ago

Not currently, lol, because eating makes me hot and it’s 38C. This has been the case for my entire life, through many years of more scheduled eating, though.

[–] EndlessNightmare@reddthat.com 1 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Is this because meat is normally eaten hot, or does even cold (e.g. lunch meat) have this effect?

Fwiw, I don't eat meat and do have an above average heat tolerance. No idea if there is correlation.

[–] Lumisal@lemmy.world 1 points 4 days ago

Even cold, it just depends on the amount and cut.

Fatty cuts I think produce more heat than lean ones, but eating a ton either way will make you hotter.

[–] MonkderVierte@lemmy.zip 2 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago) (1 children)

Using a spray flask to keep my shirt (lower back) and socks wet, made the heatwave almost tolerable.

Personally, I fill a foot bath with cold or lukewarm water and just keep my feet in there as much as possible while having a fan aimed at me.

That combo has helped so much that I actually forget that it's too damn hot some of the time 😁
