I've been working on an online service and I'm curious if I should start off with just giving it away for free to grow traction or if I should just charge right off the bat?

My main issue is that if I get too many free users I will need to increase my infrastructure to scale which will cost me more money.

Free trial with limitations is a good start. Or to test the waters, potentially look at a Free Trial of the full software.

Would it be wise to then already show future pricing on the site or just leave it out completely and only make it visible once I have a certain amount of subscribers. Or perhaps show pricing and highlight a temporary promotion
