If the movie is finished, what's the purpose of keeping them? I'm asking this out of curiosity, not supporting or arguing for the studio.

What the other person said. Also, these artists would already have been on other projects. Most of them would have finished work on this movie months ago. Pixar has a stable of artists that are continually on staff for development or unreleased future projects. Some of the people let go had been there for 20 years.
