for some reason proton has always skeeved me out. i get gross corporate vibes from them that im not into at all.

mailbox.org (still a corporation but less sketchy IMO, and I have years of good experience with using it), disroot (nonprofit)

Agreed.

Switched a couple years ago, pay $30/year because I wanted multiple spam accounts (disconnect some online services from my real email). And I wanted to support them.

Works a treat - I get zero spam in my main account, only spam in spam accounts is from the service their for (online games, etc).

Free tier is probably fine for many people.
