It’s kind of wild that an official sub like this is just cool with positing reckless speculation about this
Maybe wait for some actual facts to become known? Idk
There’s nothing “official” about this sub. It is neither run by the NBA, nor a journalistic entity. Widespread discussion is going to happen when shit like this gets traction, and there’s zero reason /r/nba has to not allow it in a moderated capacity.
How much of the traction was because of this thread? I didn't know about it until I saw this pinned to the top of /r/NBA and i had to track down what little info I could via a few re-tweeted pics from a deleted Twitter account without any context.
They don't have to not allow it, of course. I still think this megathread was the wrong move and got a lot of people wildly speculating and stirring rumors on this today who otherwise wouldn't have if there wasn't an /r/NBA metathread about it.
I would add: if there wasn't a thread like this, there would be a constant battle of deleting new threads and comments in all of the other threads. This thread at least functions like a "Giddey speculation and rumors quarantine thread" and keeps it from running rampant everywhere else.
I thought mods handled this well. When you think about it, they didn't allow any posts, limited it to megathread to give people a place to discuss - they didn't diminish, limit, and extinguish anything, but made it so that it doesn't become mainstream until anything is taken to a level above a rumor/lie posted on social media.
Letting people express their views, ideas, findings, but not completely overtake the sub.
