the only baller i could think of who could legitimately talk about changing to a different sport and succeeding at a high level is steve nash and soccer

There is a strong crossover between Australian NBA players who were good Australian Rules Football prospects as kids. Most of them play representative junior Australian Football until they're 15yo or 16yo when it becomes impossible to do both.
