Usually it's for more reach, influence, power and possibly direct control instead of using someone else (friend, lobbying etc.). This should cover the majority of businessmen going to politics.
Of course there are those who enter the world of politics because of their strong conviction to change the world for better or worse, because each of us, whether we admit it or not, whether we do it actively or not, we want to imprint our will on the world around us.
