ISO standardized abbreviations are mandatory for country-domains.

Even Trump cannot change ".us" into ".tr" :-) (but please don't tell him anyway)

No, but he could definitely pull some strings to get IANA to add .trump as a new gTLD (honestly, I'm surprised it hasn't already happened - I had to check) and the government has no obligation to continue using .us or .gov as far as I know.

Doesn't need to pull any strings. You can buy almost any new gTLD you want, for the rich the price is chump change.
