Okay, so we know at this point that the players that fans actually want to see in the dunk contest usually don't do it because they're afraid of tarnishing their reputation if they miss their dunks or lose to a bench player.
So what we're usually left with is a small pool of 4-5 players that fans have never heard of, who usually still take 3-4 attempts to make a dunk.
My proposal is to not even include nba players in the dunk contest anymore. Open it up to all the YouTube dunkers that do this shit for a living.
At the end of the day, we just wanna see good dunks made on the first attempt. So why wouldn't we have Jordan kilganon and these other dunkers come and just put on a show? Gives them exposure on a national stage. Nba players can just sit back and enjoy knowing they don't have to be out there getting embarrassed. And the fans get probably the best dunk contest in years. Win for everyone.
Thoughts?
Do we though? I don't think people care that much about high level dunking unless it's from recognizable NBA players or young guys who make their name during that night. Kilganon actually made appearances in some dunk contests and even helped participants craft dunks. No one really gives a shit though.
I think the biggest problem with the contest is the whole pageantry behind it and the corny props. Eliminate or ban at least the latter and guys will be forced to actually be creative in terms of dunks not the crap surrounding it.
Problem with forcing these nba guys to be creative is they simply aren't creative enough, or they're taking 4-5 attempts to make a dunk that would've looked great on a 1st attempt. But when you can see what they're planning and then see them botch it multiple times, it takes away all the shone when they do make it.
