Why not pad that floor area?

Pad the floor area around the court, ball hitting the pad and having a dead bounce will make it easier to tell if it's out of bounds and protect players that dive for them

Also get all the fucking photographers out from right under the basket

Pads can still destroy your hand unless you’re talking about a foam pit on the edge. Helmets have protected heads in football but made players play the game with riskier tackles and tactics. You can’t take injury out of many games. Just make sure rules involve players having to be in control of their bodies on risky challenges. To me, that play is a suspension for making such a stupid attempt at a block. Completely agree on the photographers and fans being so damn close

I’d argue that 85% of the most iconic on court basketball photographs ever captured were taken from under the basket. Photographers use one lens to capture dunks and other good shots from the basket they are under(like d wade with his arms wide after Lebrons transition dunk) and a different lens to capture shots on the other side of the court (MJ game winner over Utah) all from under the basket.
